Nia Vardalos opens up about adoption through foster care
Hi all
I recently learned of Nia Vardalos's 10 year struggle with infertility and her adoption through foster care. Lisa Vanderpump is another celebrity who has opened up about adopting through care.
Nia Vardalos wrote a book about her experiences "Instant Mom" and her research on different adoption avenues. I highly recommend her book to anyone considering adoption; especially if you think you cannot afford adoption.
My husband and I just signed our papers, and we are officially certified foster parents :D Now, we just wait for "the call". Hopefully someday this will lead to adoption.
Best wishes!! XOXO

Right now we are registered with a private agency. There is an option to transfer to the county someday if we choose.
I'm not sure what you mean by I haven't posted much?

What made you decide to do a private agency rather than a county one? If it's easier to FM that would be fine too.
Thanks

We went with a private agency only because they had the MAPP and parenting training available sooner than the county. The county uses their foster families first and then reaches out to the private agencies. They also use the agencies to find families for special needs/therapeutic children.
When you register as pre-adoptive the county or agency is aware you are looking to foster and would like to adopt if the child becomes freed for adoption.
No matter if you go private or county, the goal is reunification with the birth parents; but sometimes that is just not possible and the parents give up parental rights or the court takes those rights away. The child has to be in care for 22 months before they are freed, but the court systm has the final say. Sometimes they give the parents many chances to fix whatever they have to fix. Every case is different really.
If you adopt the child, the courts/county/state are no longer involved really. They are always available resources for you if you need.
I haven't been posting on this board much, more lurking. I was very active on other boards but after my IF journey I didn't post at all for a while. I did post something about foster care adoption a while ago, it was under a different name.

i belong to a group that is has waiting families and waiting foster families in it. It is great to get the perspectives of both. They have a speaker coming June 5th from FPAC... just thought it might be helpful.
