WOW!!!! This country is going down the tubes. Respect has gone out the window. I feel sorry for todays youth, it's every man for himself out there. Disgusting!

Agreed! So sad.

Re: On the train home from work tonight...

This is just shameful. I'm so sorry you had to deal with this.
This situation just makes me sad... not just as a pregnant woman, but as a human being. There is no compassion or consideration for others anymore. How upsetting that there is so little respect that a police officer couldn't coax a single person out of their seats to allow a pregnant woman to sit down. What a selfish, lazy society we have turned into...

It was very nice of the cop to try to help. I love that! As for the passengers. They were so rude and disgusting. The sad thing is, it doesnt shock me that no one got up.Chat Icon

Re: On the train home from work tonight...

I tell DH all the time that chivalry died a long time ago. No one offers me their seat unless like a pp said they are getting off the next stop. I take the D and I got shoved out of the way this morning by a lady who bolted for an empty seat that I was going for. I said real nice and walked to the other side of the train

Although I have to say part of it is fear of insulting someone. My friend witnessed a guy offering his seat to a pregnant lady on the path, who then screamed at him that she wasn't pregnant. I'm sure he'll never offer again. But if you have a round 9 month belly it's pretty obvious your preggo and not fat.

While this story absolutely disgusts me, it doesn't surprise me. Plain and simple -- many people just suck.

People are disgusting and rude and overall MISERABLE selfish a$$holes.
If that was my son I'd be MORTIFIED ......

What kind of person raises a kid to be such a selfish man? Not to mention ALL of the other people around him on the train ?? !!

I'm very surprised that guy didn't get up, but I'm more shocked that No one else did. People just don't get up for pregnant women. Over the years of commuting, I never saw anyone give up a seat. It's awful. Some of my coworkers went out early because they couldn't take the commute

Re: On the train home from work tonight...

I would never raise my son to be like these assholes!!! Gets me infuriated!! I had to pick my DS up from a class and had my baby in her seat carrier in my arms. I lost my footing and fell very hard. I tried my best to soften her impact but she was only 2 months and cried out of being scared. I was in so much pain, newborn screaming and surrounded by people! A man just asked if I was okay but I couldn't answer I was in so much pain. No one grabbed the baby or helped me up, and this was in front of a church. I was so disgusted with people after that.

It never ceases to amaze me how far our society has tumbled. That's just unbelievable. Does no one care about others anymore??!! I can't believe some of these stories! Absolutely disgusting!

I'm not even surprised. I rode the subway my entire pregnancy. My big belly would be practically in a guys face while I was standing holding the pole during rush hour and they never offered their seat.

I agree with PP that 95% of the time it was other women who were the first to offer. It's very disgusting how society these days have zero respect for the elderly/disabled/pregnant individuals.

Nothing surprises me. I am on my third and barely ever have I been offered a seat. When I was 9 months pregnant with DD2 a woman literally pushed me to get a seat - my friend yelled at her about 1) pushing a pregnant woman and 2) not giving me the seat and the woman wouldn't move or apologize. I am almost 22w with #3 and have been obviously pregnant for at least 6 weeks - not one person has offered me a seat. I can't believe someone would disrespect a cop like that though - that is a whole other level.

I've always said that commuting seems to bring out the absolute WORST of humanity. People are disgusting. As a fellow commuter, I feel your pain. I don't know why I'm surprised any more when people blatantly see I'm pregnant and still push and shove their way past me in corridors at Penn or don't offer a seat if i'm standing. It seriously makes me lose faith in humanity

I thought about this thread as I stood all the way to Penn Station on the subway today. I saw a guy glance at my belly and then quickly look away as if he never saw me so that he wouldn't have to consider offering me his seat...not that anyone else was offering either. Some people just suck.

Pregnancy is NOT just your issue. It is literally the life blood of the human existence. Anybody that doesn't recognize this is a moron. I would have gladly given up my seat to you!!

ETA: I almost think there should be some sort of sign on trains/subways...something short and sweet like:

Everyone has tired feet,
Everyone deserves a seat.
But if you see someone less able then you, giving up your seat is the right thing to doChat Icon

Re: On the train home from work tonight...

Ugh makes me sick. I used to see pregnant people standing all the time in NJ transit buses. I would give up my seat and everyone else would just go on reading and pretend not to see the HUGE pregnant girl.

One time I fell so bad on the bus while standing…I was thrown into a seat and then fell down. Thank god I was not pregnant but I bruised my tailbone so bad and I cried when it happened. I can't imagine if someone pregnant was standing when that happened.
