adding a fireplace?
has anyone done this? is it extremely expensive?
and stupid question, does it have to be on an exterior wall? what are the options if you want something on an interior wall?

Very expensive from what I heard.
Have you looked at fake fireplaces? Some of them look so real and flicker. I have one and love it. It has bookcases on each side and even heats the room if you want.

It depends on what you want.
for a gas fireplace, its definitely doable. Interior will makes it harder since there is more interior work to bury the exhaust pipe in the wall.
Obviously, you have to have gas in the house for that.
Units start in the 1500-2000 range and go up from there. There is also the work to run the gas to it, and vent the unit, then it is whatever finishes you want on it.
it can get pricey depending on how elaborate you go.
we did ours as part of a whole house reno. it came out great, but I have some costs but not really the full impact of others
our unit was around $3800 and the stone on the front was $1800.

I can't really help with costs, as I bought my house with a fireplace.
But if you do add one, get the C/O upfront. (At least if selling down the road is even a potential consideration).
This is one of those things that comes up when people sell... when I bought my house, the seller had to obtain the C/O for the fireplace and it took a long time (luckily we closed with $$ in escrow).

My first home, a condo, the people who owned it before me had added a gas fireplace -- wood mantle, marble backing, the gas, the pipes for it, the works -- as if it came with the house.
Soup to nuts, all in, around $10,000.
It was absolutely gorgeous, I'll give them that.
