DS with ADHD starting medication
My DS has ADHD. He's in an integrated class, receives speech 2x week and group therapy weekly... We've been doing this for over a year now. He is suffering greatly socially & educationally. Finally after waiting months, we got in to see a recommended ped. neurologist. (we've already seen another ped. neurologist who I wasn't happy with_ and a cognitive behavioral therapist). I still have two behavioral developmental pediatricians I'm suppose to see in July...
But we've (my DH & I) decided to start DS on medication.
I'm insanely nervous. I think this is the right decision. I've heard about the horror of finding the correct medication & dosage.
I guess I'm just looking for any advice someone could offer.
TIA

DS with ADHD starting medication
Having been through this, I know it can be really difficult. I guess my best advice would be two things:
All of these meds have side effects. Some are immediate, like headache and stomach ache, and usually wear off after about a week once the body adjusts. Some are behavioral, and those are the ones you need to keep an eye out for. Depression, anger, emotional issues, these are the ones that you need to call the doctor about and remove the meds if you are concerned.
The second piece of advice would be not to give up. There are many medications, and just because one doesn't work does not mean another won't.
Good luck to you. Medication did not work out for my son, and we are now managing without it, but it is hard.
