Advice for student teacher

I've just gotten my student teaching placement for the fall and I am so excited/nervous! My undergrad was in dance studies so other than observations during grad school this will be my first time in a traditional classroom. I've taught dance classes for 10 years and have also been working full-time at LIU in order to receive tuition remission. Four years and two babies later I'm finally almost there! I guess I'm just looking for any advice to make this a smooth transition. I want to stand out, help my cooperating teachers, and really get as much out of this as possible. I'd really appreciate any tips you have to share. Thanks in advance!

Advice for student teacher

Don't hesitate to work. I've seen so many who just sit there. S start by checking homework. Ask the teacher what they want?

Take pictures?

Ask to observe other classes.

Take notes

Congrats! It sound like you've worked really hard to get here! I think the best thing you can do is communicate openly and honestly with your cooperating teachers. Ask them what they would like you to do and once you begin teaching ask for feedback and be open to it. I also agree with participating actively from the beginning. Don't try to take over or anything but stand up, walk around the room and observe what the teacher is doing. Good luck!

Advice for student teacher

I've had a few student teachers. The most important thing is to be professional. I had some that weren't. They would dress very casual and text. One would make personal phone calls when I was working during lunch. The best one I had put in the extra effort. She came up with good lessons and helped a lot in the classroom. Offer to help the teacher. If the teacher is swamped offer to put up the bulletin board for her or check papers. Make her life easier. Do not run out the door as soon as the day is over unless the teacher does. Get there on time or early. I had one student teacher who was always late. Just try your best and do what is best for the kids. Good luck!

I definitely second being professional in dress and behavior. I've had student teachers have their cell phones out and text during class! Work hard, get involved as much as you can and double check everything. Make sure that you are teaching the correct information. Be on time and help your cooperating teacher out with whatever you can. Show your eagerness to learn. Lastly, be open to suggestions and try not to take constructive criticism to heart. Good luck!
