Also...I want to point out...claiming his "hate" is mental illness is just a way for white privilege to justify his actions, but also does a HUGE disservice to the mentally ill populations itself. We cannot allow the media to lump the mentally ill in with a hatemonger like Dylann Roof...he had the mental capacity to premeditate a hate crime of this nature.
I can't help myself.
You are the most self hating white person I have ever come into contact with.
Ever. Absolutely ever.
Flame away
Wow. I think that's all I can really say to this comment. This comment is the very crux of what she is getting at. Bravo for the example.
This isn't about sticking on the side of your own race, which is what I think you are trying to get at with your little comment there. All of us, no matter what colour we are, need to keep talking about this. This needs to be talked about.
I'll just leave you with two articles that I found interesting. Perhaps you would, too?
https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/our-humanity-naturally/201506/anti-intellectualism-is-killing-america
http://www.alternet.org/news-amp-politics/11-ways-white-america-avoids-taking-responsibility-its-racism
It's is 100000% not about sticking to the side of your own race. It's about every comment this poster makes on anything that has any sort of race connection, it's always white privilege. This last comment just put me over the edge. And when I say every comment, I mean it. I knew I shouldn't have even opened this thread seeing who has started it, but I needed to voice my feelings for these poor people and their families. Just as I felt the need to say that last comment. Knowing it wasn't a popular reply, but I had to because I felt so strongly about the constant finger pointing at every other person who doesn't believe they are horrible for being white. I just can't stand it
Admitting the existence of white privilege has absolutely nothing to do with self hate based on race.
Nothing at all.
Admitting the existence of white privilege is a little like saying that the planets revolve around the sun or that red and yellow together make orange.
Absolutely.
Phyllisnjoe, it makes me really disheartened to hear you say that to kitten1929 because it really shows just how many people are unwilling to learn about how white privilege works and affects us all. For years, I have been working on recognizing my privilege, and learning how being raised in a white supremacist society causes me to be racist. it's a constant work in progress, i will be doing it for the rest of my life, and i will remain open to others' critiques. it's uncomfortable, yet nothing compared to what people of color have to endure on a daily basis.
for those who would like to do the same, this is an awesome collection of articles on white privilege. It's a good jumping off point. Anyone who wants to chat about stuff, feel free to pm me.
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1wFVr09knyR78YdRE3E3sZ_ZDKA9MjIdkwch4hR3jEQs/edit?pli=1
It has nothing to do with me being unwilling to learn and a lot to do with the finger pointing in all posts pertaining to race especially. It bothers me tremendously.
Nobody was saying he's not racist. That wasn't the point at all on any of these posts. They were, mine included, stating he is indeed a racist pig. My point and point of some others was that he must have a mental illness. The OP said the media is making you feel bad for him and if it were a black man he'd be an animal or thug, if it were a Muslim, he'd be a terrorist, etc. I DO NOT feel bad for him and neither does anyone who has posted on this thread.
But to continually say the same thing, pointing fingers, gets me every time. If someone here was siding with him, go for it. But nobody has.
It was my bad for letting my raw emotion get the best of me and saying what this. But I couldn't resist the urge to get it out. Maybe it's just because the OP and I have have never agreed on pretty much anything and the way she words her replies rubs me the wrong way.
Raw emotion is raw emotion. Your comment about self hating white person speaks volumes about your position on racism and privilege, despite your personal feelings about the other poster.
eta what do you mean about finger pointing?
So your reply is stating im a racist?
Finger point = every time someone posts about what they think - be it hes mentally unstable or him wearing a bullet proof vest, etc means you are just showing your white privilege
thats what finger pointing means. Including your reply to me, sounds like you calling me a racist. I showed my true racist, white privileged self by stating she seems like a self hater

Re: Shooter caught in Charleston shooting spree
I don't wanna speak for Phyllis but what I'm wondering and maybe what she is too
Is that why does white privilege come into play bc someone thinks this person is mentally unstable
I'm not denying it Exits it any way. But why is it wrong to think he is mentally unstable??

Re: Shooter caught in Charleston shooting spree
The problem with people stating he must be mentally ill to have done this, is that it is an EXCUSE, one which could potentially allow him to go free for viciously MURDERING 9 INNOCENT PEOPLE in a freakin CHURCH!!!
I don't give a good ******** if he's mentally ill... he's a monster and he should fry.
And I can't help but believe if the races were reversed, people would not be saying he's mentally ill, they'd ONLY be saying he's a monster who should fry. And they'd be right, but that's what makes calling this animal "mentally ill" indicative of white privilege. He doesn't get to just be the monster that he is, there has to be something else "wrong" with him. There's something wrong with EVERYONE who murders in cold blood. And they should all be locked up together in a tomb and let them kill each other.

Re: Shooter caught in Charleston shooting spree
So even if he is found guilty by mental disease he has a chance to get out?
He would not be in a institution for the rest of his life?
And for the record I believe anyone. Anyone who can murder in cold blood has mental issues

I don't think he would get off completely, but I don't think it would be the same kind of harshness that 9 counts of premeditated murder deserve.

Ok. I see that point. He can claim in sanity and live in a hospital and not be prosecuted as the murderer he is. I can totally see that.
For me, when I say he's deranged, I didn't mean it in a "he doesn't know what hes doing because he's crazy way" but in a He's a Deranged Friggin Maniac, etc etc etc.
But I see if the media is spinning it into a mental illness, it may be seen that way and that will be the case they lead in court. What I don't get is how is that White Privilege? Have there never been cases of minority people doing heinous acts on their own that were also called maniacs? That i'd have to research to find out

That's understandable. And again I don't think he should have leniency. But I still don't understand why in wrong for thinking he has mental issues. I still Want him punished as you do

He is insane. Period. He is also a racist. The two are not the same. There are plenty of sane racists and insane people without an ounce of hate in their beings. Charles Manson was able to premeditated his crimes and bring people along for the ride. He is not sane. No one said his insanity was an excuse for his hate crime.
He is an insane, racist, terrorist. He is everything bad that can be said.
I'm so sorry for these people.

I would bet - no real research done on my part but I read lots of random crap (lol) - that there is a significant disparity in the numbers. Both among those who have tried for an insanity plea and the number who have successfully gotten it.

Re: Shooter caught in Charleston shooting spree
lets be realistic, the justice system will totally favor a white person over a black person. he's more likely to get life in a mental institution and a black person's more likely to get the death penalty or a harsh jail sentence (not sure about DP laws in that state).
just the simple fact that the judge at the bond hearing decentered the victims' families and said that roof's family is a victim as well. and that he has freely used the n word. what kind of justice system perpetuates that type of behavior, but ours?

Roof's family IS a victim, as well. They are not the ones who committed the crime. Even if they are ALSO racists- they didn't gun down 9 innocent people. Imagine if it was your son who did that?
I am also so tired of hearing about white privilege. Normal, SANE people don't go into churches and murder people. Black, white or purple- they just don't. If he was black and walked into a white church- I think everyone would still say they were insane.

I have an example that will probably turn your stomach (warning!) but its a parallel... the animal who killed Officer Ramos and Officer Liu... was he not mentally ill? How FREAKING insane (and a monster) do you have to be to walk up to 2 police officers and murder them in cold blood like that? Being angry about the state of race relations in this country is one thing. Trying to change things is one thing. Murdering 2 innocent police officers is INSANE. Did anyone call him that? Not that I heard. And I don't care either, he should rot in jail like the animal he is. But the same principal should apply.

I honestly don't remember what most were saying about this case but I do remember it happened around the same time as the protesting. But I do remember thinking he thought he was a hero doing this "justice" for Brown & Garner But in reality, he was a sick, twisted a-hole

No they wouldn't, not with the same meaning behind saying the white kid is 'mentally ill or unstable" I am far from a self hating white person, but if you can not at least acknowlege the differences here, you're blind ....... I personally think the media escalates it and makes a bad situation worse, but it is absolutely therem, media or not. If this was a black kid that walked into church and murdered 9 white people he would be called a thug, a drug dealer, an amimal, and gang member - and THEN, he'd be called mentally unstable. This white kid is being called mentally ill, as if he can ONLY be capable of doing this because he's 'sick' - Same exact thing happend with that piece of sh*t in Newtown CT - he was depressed, he was mentally unstable, he was ill ..........HE was white though so he wasn't an amimal or a drug dealer or a gang member or a thug .......
that's the point, and I think it's being missed here.
I personally don't care who you are or where you come from or what color you are - there is absolutely no justifiable excuse you can possibly feed me for mrudering someone.

1. I can honestly say that if the races were reversed in this crime- my first thoughts wouldn't be thug, gang or drugs- but complete psycho.
2. I don't think anyone here is excusing his behavior.
3. Why can't anyone make their points without belittling others?! It makes me crazy on here. If you don't see what others want you to you're blind or ignorant etc. When in reality all those things could be further from the truth.

Beacuse the argument isn't about, or directed at you personally, or anyone posting here, as an individual person - it's about the collective group, the collective American society, as a whole - how people think, react, behave, and respond in these types of situations, IMO, the media in particular.
I, personally, am with you on #1, and I've said it multiple times. I don't care who you are, you're a murderer, you have NO excuse in my book. black, white, purple or any other color.
But I, as one person, am not the problem, as you as one person's opinion and view are not the problem - there is, however, a very large collective view on a black vs. a white murdered, ESPECIALLY, how they are portrayed by the media, and I don't think it's something anyone can deny.

Re: Shooter caught in Charleston shooting spree
I can agree that this is not the work of a sane person. But I do think that more focus needs to be put on the fact that this was a racially charged shooting. To me it feels like people saying "oh he's just mentally ill" is like sweeping it under the rug. I think Jon Stewart said it best in the link posted earlier in this thread-- about how people are just kind of saying he was crazy and no explanation, etc.
To be honest, I'm tired of all this sh*t happening. Nothing is being done. We are too busy arguing with each other and then just dismissing it.
I am discussing this issue in my American Studies Discussion class tomorrow. The talk never goes like it does on here though. There isn't much of a debate over here. I sometimes wish there was more of a debate because then I wouldn't have to think of so many questions to get them to talk . The questions are just like "Why is this happening in America?", "What's up with certain US states?", you get the idea. I have no answers for them. It sucks.

Shooter caught in Charleston shooting spree
I don't think by saying he's mentally ill is brushing it under the rug. IMO- people who can do something like this HAVE TO be mentally ill. It was ABSOLUTELY racially charged, but there are lots of racist people who DON'T go into churches filled with black people and gun them down, KWIM?

Re: Shooter caught in Charleston shooting spree
To me it is not mutually exclusive that he is both a racist, and he is also a psychopath. Do I think he was of sound mind and body when he committed is heinous horrific crime, yes. And he should get the death penalty. But the act of sitting, in prayer, for an hour with all of the victims, and that cold, calculating but distant vacant look is what makes him psychotic to me. But I still think he planned and carred out the racist attack and the attack was motivated by the race of the victims.
