RE- need a referral?

I called an RE to set up an appt because I want to move things along a little quicker. I have been trying for a year, got pregnant twice, and had an early mc both times. Because of this, they said they won't make an appt. until my obgyn sends a referral. They said that I am just "high risk," not infertile... Has this happened to anyone? Should I try another practice?

Re: RE- need a referral?

Let me just say I wouldn't jump to an RE yet. It's not that you are infertile since you can get pregnant on your own your issue is staying pregnant which can be something as simple as low progesterone. Most of the infertility board can't even get that(pregnant). I would request a blood panel and review your progesterone levels the last 2 periods then work from there. Also talk to your OB about which your next steps should be since IF may not be your issue.

My worry is that my OB wants to get me on Clomid because I have a short luteal phase. However, friends and family are telling me that Clomid is better administered from an RE than an OBGYN because you are monitored more.

I was told that, this month, I can use ovulation sticks (since I don't know when I am ovulating due to the mc) to pinpoint ovulation, and then come in to my obgyn's office 7 days after that to get my progesterone checked. If the levels are low, he will give me something to raise the levels. He said the issue with doing this, though, is that if I did not implant at that time, then the extra progesterone can cause me to prolong my period from coming, and mess with my cycles.

If this doesn't work, then we will start on the clomid.

I guess this might be something I should try out first, and maybe worry about the clomid from there?

RE- need a referral?

You can absolutely contact an RE. RE are not just for the infertile. Like you I wanted to get a jump on things because I had a chemical pregnancy our first month trying then we were trying for the last six months after without success. I was going to contact Dr. Z at

http://www.nyreproductivewellness.com

for a consultation but found out I was pregnant last month. A friend of mine who was also trying for about 8 months conceived using him. She tracked her period and was not ovulating normally and he helped her get back on track. I was worried that he wouldn't see me because I was trying less than a year and I'm under 35. My friend assured me that he would see me with no questions asked without a referral.

RE- need a referral?

From a strictly billing/insurance position: Some insurances require a referral through THEM to see a specialist. I would also contact your insurance to see what coverage you have for RE and what your plan covers and doesn't. I don't work for an RE but I DO work for a specialist and we tell our patients to be aware of their plan provisions so they don't get slammed with a bill.

When I started IF treatments it was hell trying to get my insurance at the time to cover it. I was covered under Aetna(just switched to my DH at the time) and I was told they wouldn't cover me for IF because I've had successful pregnancies in the past. I immediately switched back to UHC and my particular plan no referral was needed (had to obtain one before the RE would see me when I was under Aetna).

I do understand why they are requesting a referral it's either your insurance or because you have been able to conceive on your own they are just putting you in a high risk category because of the losses.

Pending on the RE your age can be an issue to some degree. They may want you to try on your own (especially if your under 34 )and once you become pregnant they would want you on p4 right away.

RE- need a referral?

I would trust the OB If they have a plan for you. Try what they are offering and you feel comfortable with you may never need to see a RE. I would say if you try with the OB for 6 months with their clomid plan and nothing I would push for a referral

First so sorry for your loss (again)! You know I've been there!!!
I do suggest clomid with an RE because you're monitored however if your luteal phase is short I thought ovadrill would be the fix because it brings on ovulation giving your body the 12 to 14 days it needs to implant (that's the luteal phase right? )
Also you know you can get pregnant. Sticking is the issue and therefore I recommend seeing a doctor who will give you the necessary tests to see if there's a reason for the losses.
An RE should take you. Check out Dr. Greg Zapantis in Jericho or Dr. Beth McAvey in Garden City (RMA Group).
