Getting induced tonight at North Shore - your experience?

Hi ladies,

Getting induced tonight as I'm 41 weeks tomorrow and my OBs won't let me go past that :( Baby is begin stubborn - 70% effaced and fingertip dilated as of last Thursday and no contractions at all!

Just wondering if anyone has been induced at North Shore and can share their experience? I'm getting cytotec overnight and then pitocin in the morning. If you had the same, did your DH stay with you overnight?

Also, for those that received epidurals, did you have residents do them? I'm kind of worried about new July residents who just started doing my epidural with no experience...

Thanks in advance!

Getting induced tonight at North Shore - your experience?

I just got induced with 5 weeks ago at North Shore. My story is similar to yours- I was 41 weeks with no contractions and completely closed. The experience was great, my nurses were amazing. They gave me something to drink every 2 hours (forgot the name, maybe Cytotec??) baby wasn't budging. After 12 hours they upped my dosage and I finally started dilating. My doc broke my water and 2 hours later I gave birth. No pitocin was needed.
My DH was in the room with me all night, he dozed off for a few hours in the reclining hair they have.
Not sure about the anesthesiologist, he was very professional though and knew what he was doing. He had a very calming presence also.

Good luck! You are in great hands over there!!

Re: Getting induced tonight at North Shore - your experience?

I was induced with DS1 4 years ago. Went into the hospital (Huntington Hospital) around 10pm, and was supposed to get cervadil right away - but they had emergencies so I waited till around 2:00 a.m.

DH didn't stay with me overnight - he went home and slept and came back to me early in the morning.

I got my epidural by an anesthesiologist about 8 hours after my single dose of cervadil. I took morphine about 30 minutes after the cervadil - which took the edge off enough to sleep.

Good luck to you!!!

I was induced at North Shore with my first... in July also... but 7 years ago...

Anyway, they did cervadil at night, husband stayed, they checked on me often, in the morning nothing much was going on, so they gave me pitocin, and my doc asked if I wanted the epidural then and there so I said sure.

The anesthesiologist did the epidural, not a resident, and my doc was friends with him, so that was good.

Anyway, it was fine and she was born at about 5:05 in the afternoon.

I was induced there in January at almost 42w. I was slightly effaced and a fingertip dilated, so less progress than you. I got checked Into labor and delivery at 9:30pm, had cytotec inserted by a resident around midnight. DH stayed with me overnight and we both slept a little on and off until 6 or 7am, when I got pitocin. I got the epidural shortly after that, as soon as it was offered. The OB broke my water around noon and my DS was born a couple hours later. Was a good experience.
Eta- the anesthesiologist who gave me the epi was
Not a resident and he was excellent. Maybe bc of the way the timing of my epi worked out?

I've never heard of a resident giving an epidural. Only a nurse anesthetist or anesthesiologist can administer it. Residents may check you throughout the induction until it's time to deliver(and may deliver if your OB doesn't make it in time but that's it.

I was induced there in April. Cytotec every two hours starting at 6pm the night before through 6am the next morning. Followed by pitocin, Dr. Breaking water and an EPI. As far as the induction goes, you will be hooked up to monitors and IVs and need to call a nurse to use the bathroom so don't plan on sleeping because if youre like me, you'll have to pee every hour and also you need to drink the cytotec every two hours. Eat a nice meal before you go in. Once you're admitted it's ice chips only, you can't even have water. There are two anesthesiologist dedicated to the maternity ward. A resident will not administer the epi. Like pp, said they may just check your progress. I ended up requesting and having a c section because I didn't progress and the epi didn't work. The hospital staff is absolutely amazing. Loved all the nurses and both anesthesiologist. I wanted to extend my stay. I miss the hospital sometimes haha.

Thanks for asking this! I am 40 weeks this coming Monday 7/13 and will be induced as well at NSUH if nothing by the end of that week. Are you with the Rifkin/Kaufman doctor group?

Re: Getting induced tonight at North Shore - your experience?

I was induced just over a year ago and had a great experience. It was my second (first was early) so I only needed pitocin and it was a very quick induction. A close friend was induced six months before and stayed overnight for cervadil I think. She also had a good experience but didn't get much sleep because of course the nurses and in and out regularly. Her husband stayed. We were both in NSUH and use the same practice. I love the staff there and continued to use the same doctor/hospital even after moving much farther east. I can't imagine delivering anywhere else.
