has anyone not taken the glucose test by choice?

just curious if it's so necessary.

ETA: i posted this below to clarify..

it's not about tasting the drink, it's about the crap that's in it. i eat really healthy and take care of myself and don't even drink soda and i look at this drink and it's crap.

i was just wondering if there are other alternatives.

i will take it because i want to be sure everything is fine, i just am 'eh' about that chemicals that are in it.

I took the test. To me diabetes is dangerous to both me and the baby. Why would you not do the test? I do understand not doing some of the other testing (for example the nucal tests) if you would not do anything if you found out that your baby was a carrier for a particular disease. But with diabetes there are things that can be done to help you and the baby. some as easy as adjusting diet and/or taking insulin.

Yes it's absolutely necessary!! If you had GD and didn't know so as a result you weren't taking the proper precaution(diet, exercise, and some women even need insulin) it could develop into some serious complications with you and your baby(include fetal lost).

Get it done it taste horribe but your health and your baby's health I would think is worth it.

Re: has anyone not taken the glucose test by choice?

Yes, it is absolutely necessary. This is coming from someone who likely had undiagnosed late onset GD with DS resulting in an almost 11lb baby.

I was actually just diagnosed with GD tonight for baby #2 at almost 36weeks pregnant and I still have to go through the treatment plans even though I only have 4 weeks to go. It's definitely no joke.

Absolutely necessary unless you plan to follow a diabetic diet and test your blood sugar daily.

IMO, it would be extremely irresponsible to decline/not have the necessary GD testing. While GD can easily be controlled throughout pregnancy with diet and insulin (if need be), it is a serious condition that when left untreated/undiagnosed can have major negative ramifications for both mom and baby.

I don't think you can not take it. Or if you do they just automatically diagnose you as GD and you have to follow a diet and test your blood sugar for a few weeks until they believe you that all is fine. I know someone who declined it bc of a terrible reaction she had to the drink with her first baby and they made her get a glucose meter and start watching her sugars 4x a day!

This. You certainly can decline it, but they will have to treat you as if you have it so unless there is a very good reason for opting out its in everyone's best interests to do it.

A little bit of chemicals ONE time will never hurt the baby
GD will.

That is very fuzzy logic.

Take the test.

Exactly. And if you fail the 1 hr, you will have to take it again. Maybe try to see if you can take the 2 hour? Then if you fail, you fail or if you pass, you pass. No other tests.

Re: has anyone not taken the glucose test by choice?

If it's any consolation I had to take this damn test FOUR times this pregnancy. If my baby is healthy and normal, I am absolutely certain you will be fine only taking it once. Chat Icon

I know some docs and midwives will let ppl drink orange juice and or have a bagel instead of the normal drink.

ask about that.
