Talk to me about leather couches and dogs
We need to get new couches for our den. We have 2 70 lb. dogs who often lay on our couches. My husband feels that leather would be a terrible option because they will put tears in it with their nails (accidentally, when jumping off the couch, etc.). I think it's a great option because dog hair won't stick to it and if it's good quality leather, it won't tear easily. Neither one of us have any personal experience though, so this is all just guessing. Can anyone share their experience either way? Thanks!

I would pass on it. I'm just scared of leather and animals, granted I have cats that scratch it but my dog might too. If you use one of those shower squeegees you can rub it over a microfiber couch and collect the hair that way to vacuum it.

Re: Talk to me about leather couches and dogs
We have leather couches. My husky rarely jumped on the couch, but our new dog definitely does. We've had no issues with tearing (knock on wood!)

Never had a problem with the dog on our leather couch... And the hair comes right off... It's the best.

Re: Talk to me about leather couches and dogs
I have leather couches but my dog does not go on it. She use to go on my couch in the den but when we got a new one I refused to let her go on that one. If you want to break the habit it is a good time while getting rid of the old couches.

Re: Talk to me about leather couches and dogs
We also went with leather because of the dog...we have a 100lb lab...it was definitly a good decision...it does have some scratches but I would take that over the dog hair sticking to the couch anyday

Talk to me about leather couches and dogs
I have a relatively expensive leather couch - my 60lb dog made a nice rip on "her" end of it with her nails. She is allowed on it - sleeps on it every night, but I was surprised at how easily it ripped. It was after getting a trim, so maybe her nails were jagged... I wouldn't buy another leather couch as long as I have a dog that is allowed on the furniture.

I stayed away from leather when we got a new couch because of our dog. He runs and jumps all over the couch and I was afraid of scratches and tears

I have one 95lb and one 65lb dog.. and have always had leather couches with my pups.. Never had an issue with holes/punctures/scratching etc.. (growing up my mom had fabric couches... And cleaning the leather is such a breeze compared to fabric!)

Talk to me about leather couches and dogs
I ended up reselling a brand new microfiber couch due to the infinite amount of hair from my two beasts. Replaced with an almost new leather couch I bought off of Craigslist some 7 yrs ago. No doubt that it is much easier to remove dog hair from leather. Now however, I am noticing more and more nail scratches from them jumping up when someone is at the door. Allowing them on the couch was the biggest mistake I ever made. Especially since they stay off all of our furniture (most importantly, THE BED!) Was going thru chemo and loved the fact that I could hug and pet them when I was nothing but a lug on the couch. IMO, if you are determined to keep allowing them on the couch, I certainly would not spend a ton of $ on a couch...leather or not.
