Anyone else a CSA member?
This is my first year joining a CSA and I have to say, the value is incredible, the quantity is great and the quality of the fruit and veggies I get is awesome! I also get eggs bi-weekly and those taste like the eggs I've had in Europe...real!
Even as a longtime vegetarian, there are some vegetables that are new to me (in terms of prepping and cooking them, mostly) and I'm really loving the whole learning process!
My friend and I split a vegetable and fruit share. I have the eggs as my own purchase. Since the produce is split, my porition comes out to roughly $18/week for all organic, local produce and eggs from chickens that get to live like chickens! Her portion is even less since she opted out of eggs.
My only regret is that I didn't do this sooner!

Anyone else a CSA member?
What farm ate you doing it through? I did it once and while I enjoyed it I found I still had to buy a lot of produce bc what they gave just wouldn't get me through a week. I can't remember if I did fruit or just veggies.

We do ours through Norwich Meadows Farm - and she and I split an individual share. According to the site, it's ideal for 1-2 people. She and I have PLENTY each for us and our husbands. It's worth looking into that farm!!

What kind of veggies have you been getting? I looked into joining a CSA but I'm picky with veggies and I was afraid there would be a lot of things I wouldn't eat. Have you found most are yummy?

Everything is fantastic. DH and I are vegetarians - he will eat any veggies and I will eat anything but cilantro, okra and some onions.
Off the top of my head, we have gotten the following within the last few weeks:
Greens - lots of them: a variety of lettuce, escarole, a variety of kale, collard greens, Swiss chard, napa cabbage, dandelion greens, pac choi
Carrots
Cucumbers
Kohlrabi
Radishes - red, black and white varieties
Fava beans
Fresh peas
Garlic and garlic scapes
Beets
Herbs - mint and parsley
Broccoli
Cauliflower
Fennel
Summer squash
So far with fruit we've only received rhubarb and a variety of cherries...but LOTS of cherries, which is awesome because I love them and use them all up with no problem. It is early in the season so fruit will start to kick up more very soon.

Anyone else a CSA member?
I love when they start sending peaches, eggplant zucchini and celery..all of the things I don't grow. The peaches taste like the ones in Europe and the juice drips down your chin...

Anyone else a CSA member?
We are doing one through Sang Lee Farms (they are on the North Fork). They are certified organic but that isn't the most important to me. They deliver to the Merrick Jewish Center every week. We love it so far. Everything is so fresh and I love trying things that I wouldn't have tried otherwise

I used to think it was expensive but when I sat down and worked out the figures, it's really much cheaper than buying produce at a supermarket, vegetable stand or farmer's market. The sticker shock comes from the fact that you have to pay for everything upfront and before the season starts. It's something that you have to prepare yourself for financially - but I can honestly tell you that in the past few weeks, my grocery bills are so much lower because I don't need produce.

We aren't doing one this year, but I think you have to be willing to try a lot of different things in order for it to be worth it for you...we shop at farmers market every week and eat whatever is local and in season...it is worth it for us as we eat a lot of produce each week...but, for example, my inlaws, eat only broccoli, lettuce, or green beans as vegetables, so for someone like them, a lot of the produce would be a waste since they wouldn't be into trying it.

Mine delivers to a church here in Ozone Park. I think you have to sign up before the season begins, but you can definitely contact them to find out: it's the Ozone Park CSA.
This week's haul included a bunch of the stuff I listed above, plus tart cherries, blueberries, green beans and a motherload of cucumbers.

It's our first year too and I'm loving it! We are doing the Golden Earthworm CSA which has pickup locations around the island.
I'm not sure if all CSA's do this, but this one sends out an email each week outlining what we will receive, with descriptions of the veggies and how they are usually prepared. They also include links to recipes. It's been really helpful to entice me to try the uncommon stuff!

Mine sends out an email with what we're expecting to pick up after the farm delivers in the early afternoon...they don't list recipes, but they do post a few on their Facebook page. I've found loads of recipes on Pinterest - tonight we're having cucumber salad and kohlrabi fries with a siracha-yogurt dip. Both recipes were ones I found on Pinterest
We had so much kale two pickups ago...I made an awesome kale pesto. Used half of it and froze the rest!

That sounds delish! I'm planning on attempting kohlrabi fritters tonight but now may add a similar spicy dip for a kick! Thanks for the idea!

We've been doing Golden Earthworm for a few years and split a share with another LIFer. We love it! I like trying new types of veggies that I normally wouldn't pick up or see at the grocery store. DH isn't into the organic aspect of it, but he loves how fresh everything tastes. He definitely sees a difference between the CSA veggies and what he would get at the supermarket.
