When you're having a bunch of people over...

And they say to let them know what they should bring, do you name things or say that you don't need anything?

I want to say "Bring a dessert" but I feel bad like because I'm hosting I should buy everything so I always end up saying "Thank you but just bring yourselves". I don't really NEED them to bring anything (I can buy the desserts) but I know when I go to a gathering, I will never come empty handed so I get why they're asking....I do the same thing but yet I feel bad to make them buy anything. What about you guys?

it depends on the occasion, if we're just having people over to have people over and hang out, then yes, I will tell them "bring a dessert" or "bring what you want to drink" (or I will say it's pot luck and then what we're making, and say bring a side or whatever). If it's a special occasion (like a birthday), then no, I make sure that everything's taken care of.

I always say "just bring yourself" b/c I like to have everything covered (I'm anal) but if they really push, I tell them to bring wine or a dessert. Can't hurt to have extras of those.

Re: When you're having a bunch of people over...

If it's for a birthday party for my DD I say to bring nothing- because they are bringing gifts.

But just a random BBQ or dinner party- if they ask I tell them. Because 9 times out of 10 they will bring something anyway (most people don't like showing up empty handed) and I'd rather tell them then end up with 10 desserts or 10 bottles of wine.

This way I can control it somewhat
You bring wine, you bring beer, you bring a dessert

Thanks everyone! It's just a random get together. If they ask again, I'll tell them to bring a dessert. :)

Re: When you're having a bunch of people over...

I usually say, oh no worries just bring yourselves...

If they press it, I say it's really fine but if you truly want to come with something (because that is how I am when I go to other people's houses) then bring whatever you would like to drink... like a wine or beer. If they also want to bring food I usually say whatever appetizer or dessert they enjoy.

Because I always put out apps and desserts but figure a few more won't hurt... especially if it is a dish they like a lot.

I usually tell them a dessert if they insist or a bottle of wine. I never go any where empty handed. Even when they say no I bring wine. I don't even drink but feel bad coming empty handed for some reason.

I agree. most people usually tell me now a dessert or bring your own liquor, etc. but when they don't I have to stress over whether I should bring an appetizer or side dish or dessert or drink. I worry if they are already going to have something similar. BTW this is for informal gatherings. If it's like a birthday party or a baptism... I'm bringing a gift and not expecting to have to bring food or drinks.

If I'm hosting a party, like a birthday, I will usually say just bring yourself. But we host lots of bbqs and everybody always brings beer and something small like a side dish, chips, fruit or a dessert.

I usually tell them that if there is anything specific (wine/beer) they like to drink to bring that

Re: When you're having a bunch of people over...

If I'm throwing a party then I supply everything and don't expect anyone to bring anything.
If it's just a friend's get together, BBQ, etc then friends always ask. If it's two families I just tell them to bring a dessert. More than two families I will tell a two families to bring a dessert and maybe another to do a fruit or app that they've made in the past and everyone loves.
I always let them know what drinks we'll have and if there's any specific alcohol they want they can bring.
