2 y/o Hearing Screening. "Refer" and Final Outcome
DS had his 2 year checkup. The ped checked vision and hearing. Right ear "passed". Left ear "refer". So now we need to make appt. with audiologist.
Has anyone experienced this and was your outcome something that was easily treated and not due to permanent hearing loss? Ie: wax, fluid, testing error? Or was it due to hearing loss not reversible?
DS's last ear infection was June but he has only had 1 or 2 others. He was swimming last weekend. Not sure if these might be factors.
Please share your stories...

Yes, DS "failed" his hearing test in one ear at age three and at age four. We didn't go to the audiologist until age four. He was fine and actually heard everything perfectly--fluid in his ear was causing the issue with the test. He's been prone to ear infections and during the exam he was found to have one and was treated with antibiotics. I didn't take him for a retest because, as I said, he's never had an actual problem hearing.

I'm an audiologist and a refer on the screening could mean all of the things that you mentioned. I'm assuming that the ped actually looked into your child's ear and if they did not mention wax-most likely wax is not the cause. However since the child has had a history of ear infections it is likely that some infection still remains (antibiotics do not always make infections go away). My suggestion to you is to visit an ENT who has an audiologist in the office so that you can have the test done and also get medical treatment if necessary as audiologists cannot prescribe antibiotics and most of them do not remove wax. Hope that helps!

2 y/o Hearing Screening.
I took DS to an ENT when he was 2 because I felt there was a hearing problem and he had speech delay. I was told that by the ENT and the audiologist that he would need hearing aids and was referred to LIJ. Long story really short, it involved 2 more separate ENT's and eventually a sedated ABR. DS' hearing is fine by all the standards and he does not need hearing aids (though I am still not totally convinced of that). My feeling is that you need to follow your instincts. If you have any concerns, make sure that you follow up.

Not sure of the reliablility of the peds test...but my DD2 also was getting "refer" (no wax and no infection) at her 2 year visit...but after she got her shots the ped heard her say a 6 word sentence and said there is no way she has a hearing problem if her speech is that well so he didn't refer her. So we never went, no issues since.
