Mentoring NYC DOE
Has anyone here been a mentor for a new staff member? What does it entail? Is there a sequence you follow when mentoring?
Thanks

Does the mentor get paid for this? I know that 2 prep periods per week are supposed to be spent helping the new teacher. Also, the mentor and new teacher must document some time spent and what they did. They fill something out online.

Re: Mentoring NYC DOE
You both will be paid at the per session rate.
There were a specific amount of hours needed each month/overall.
The mentor can go to workshops and has to document the specifics of the mentoring on a website.
I found the experience to be very helpful.

this is not true- the mentee does not get paid, just the mentor

Re: Mentoring NYC DOE
Sorry to tag on, but I have a related question. Last year was my first year and I know my mentor didn't do anything. Nobody guided her and so the whole mentoring process was thrown by the wayside. Does anyone know what happens now? Can she go back and enter our meetings together?

As per my experience, both were paid. This was as of June 2015.

I got no extra pay or preps.
And she had no guidance either. She didn't know how many hours were needed until the end of the year. The log in website list many hours that I put in. It caused me many headaches. But she was a doll!

Re: Mentoring NYC DOE
Like many things in the DOE, it is completely dependent on the school.
When I was in the DOE, they had a full-time instructional coach who, among many other duties, mentored the new teachers.
In the Commissioner's Regs, it's supposed to be two periods a week, but it was only one in my school.
