Is there such thing as a "bad" Kindergarten teacher?
was speaking with my cousin yesterday who just found out her DS Kindergarten teacher and she was upset bc this teacher is known as being 'bad' from other parents. Don't know any specifics but of course now I am freaking out bc I will soon find out my kid's teacher.
What constitues a 'bad' Kindergarten teacher though? I don't know.

My kids are older, so I have been through many teachers. I have definitely been through teachers that I don't feel are fit to be teaching little ones anymore. My sons K teacher had been teaching for many years and I don't feel that she had the patience anymore to be with K's. She was always yelling at them, losing children (class went inside from recess and she left a student outside several times), constantly punishing them. Was she a bad teacher as far as the material? Probably not. But I would go out of my way if I had another child to make sure he/she didn't get that teacher again.

My son had a horrible kindergarten teacher. It was an awful experience that has had lasting repercussions. We switched school districts because of it. Both the first district and second districts are aware of the incidents. I don't post publicly about them, but you have to be an advocate for your child.

I think parents can (at times) overreact.
I heard s story like that from our neighbor.
The "bad" teacher was a nyc school teacher who was a fresh recruit into our district & ended up being great. Lots of drama for no reason.
Teachers will have different styles & impacts on different personalities.

You really need to take what parents say with a grain of salt. Everyone has different experiences with teachers and it also depends on your child. A teacher might be great with one child and horrible with another. It happens. Last year I LOVED my 2nd grade teacher and half the parents in the class hated her. Who knows lol. Of course there are teachers that aren't the best, but it teaches the kids how to deal with different personalities.

My son had a horrible kindergarten teacher. She was well past her prime, and shouldn't have been teaching special education students. She was just awful.

I feel my DS had a 'bad' k teacher. She was hired the day before school started and had taught 4th grade the year before. She just was very tough on the kids.
That said, she may be a great upper grade teacher but she wasn't good for k.

exactly this. My son got the "bad" teacher when he was in K and she sure was. She has been teaching K in the same district for 25 years and you can tell she is just done. She has no patience, talks down to the kids, even talks down to the parents. She has a reputation. Ironically, she is a good teacher academically, but she is not a warm, fuzzy kindergarten teacher and not what I would have wanted for my son's first impression of elementary school.

Just wanted to add that it's not always an age thing. One of the greatest K teachers I've had the pleasure of working with and retired a couple of years ago was a quintessential K teacher. She never yelled. She was calm and nurturing.
Everyone has different experiences with teachers. I wouldn't base my opinion on someone else's experience.

This is my EXACT fear at the moment. All teachers have been assigned, except for one kindergarten class and of course, my ds is in that class. I'm in full blown panic mode over it. I don't know if it's a new hire or if they're moving someone down from a higher grade- which has been mentioned. I have been stressing about this for weeks now. I will meet his teacher next Tuesday at the kindergarten meet and greet.

While I believe with most teachers some click better with some than others, there are definitely better teachers than others. I think those who have not been pleased with their K teachers were upset because of the way they handled situations (I.e. Demonstrations until the guilty child broke into tears, screaming, demeaning child in front of the class). Some were upset because the teacher wasn't challenging the class as a whole resulting in many children learning nothing all year. Or no communication for a struggling student. I heard one teacher who told parents their child needed remedial math help, but sent home all stars and checks on work, no notes or calls that the child had been struggling in class. No opportunity to work with the child at home first.
For the majority of teachers I think it depends on what your child personally needs. More strict, more warm or more challenging. If you fit that box most will be pleased. But there are definitely bad teachers out there. I think if you never had one it is hard to understand.

Our school seems to have a bad first grade teacher. The definition of bad varies by who you talk to - for those kids who may not be the best behaved, the parents view her as "mean". From those who have kids who are well behaved in class - they view her as super nice but, a horrible teacher.

Absolutely. They are still such babies at this age. I really believe the teacher is setting a foundation for their school years, good or bad. I wish my kids could go back to K, they had the most amazing teacher, made them feel so individually special and really boosted their self esteem. With that being said I think any grade can have "bad" teachers depending on your child's individual needs.

Yes. My DS had a horrible Kindergarten teacher last year. She had absolutely no communication with the parents, didn't give out her email address, didn't send home the monthly flyers that she was supposed to, didn't follow through with 504 plans that were put in place for kids, called us to complain about how "bad" my child was being in class when in reality he has ADHD and she was refusing to work with us to aide him, had no patience, lacked any creativity, and only taught to the kids that were falling behind (so any children that were ahead of normal reading level or excelling in certain areas got stuck working to the slower children's pace, which caused boredom and caused them to act out - this happened with at least 6 children in the class that I know of). She was a much older (almost retired) teacher who is tenured and honestly is just going through the motions to finish out her career.
We tried getting DS moved out of her class early on when we first noticed the problems. The school refused. He ended up having such problems throughout the year that we got the Principal involved and she made it a point to put him with a teacher more suited for him this year.

DS just started K and I'm already getting the "bad" vibes for her. There is VERY LITTLE communication between the teacher and the parents. For example, DS had to sit out of gym because he wan't wearing sneakers (I was never told which days he was going to have gym). I'm hoping this is just an adjustment period and things will get on track.

Yes - we got a schedule as to which days they have what on the first day (like a "welcome" note). MWF - Gym, Tu - Music, Th - Art

Agreed. We got the same thing from DS' teacher on Day 1. Same thing last year. I've never seen it come from the gym teachers.

Agreed. We got the same thing from DS' teacher on Day 1. Same thing last year. I've never seen it come from the gym teachers.
Agreed. But also my son's school really stresses that kids wear sneakers every day (as an aside!)

I try not to worry about the teachers and have an open mind about them. Every child is different and I don't think it's fair to judge on the basis of others "experiences". If issues do arise with my daughters and their teachers I will address them directly with the teacher and/or administrators. I heard that nobody liked my daughters K teacher but j have to tell you she is a doll and most importantly, my daughter loved her. I wouldn't want to be judged unfairly...just my opinion
