Male infertility
Hi all. I have been TTC for a year and a half and we just found out that my husband has abnormally low sperm count. We have an appointment with the Urologist at the end of this month to discuss options. My husband also was told he has varicocele. I read online that the surgery for it is quick and not too painful but that only 50 percent of men who have this and get the surgery that it doesn't necessiarly fix their low sperm count. Has anyone been through this? I'm looking for advice and maybe some kind words from people that have dealt with this before. We are both sad by this news but we aren't giving up! We know our baby will come to us one day. We might just need help getting there!

Hi! My dh just had the surgery 2 days ago. He's doing much better than I had anticipated. But we won't know the results for another 3-6 months. He took the news really hard at first but the possible benefits outweighed the risks so he wanted to try it.
He went to 2 urologists who specialize in infertility and both diagnosed him and said it was def worth a try. The 2nd urologist was very conservative and wanted us to give iui 3 chances before going for it but his results were horrible so they were all canceled.
His count was good overall but his motility really fluctuated. His results were always either great or horrible and every time we had an iui they were horrible! We also learned that a medicine he was on was impacting it also. I'm hoping that he recovers quickly... Will keep you posted. Please feel free to fm with any specific ?s.

Thank you so much for sharing your story! That gives us hope! But what does he have to wait 3-6 months for?

Sperm takes time to produce so the urologist said it takes about 3-6 months to see the improvement in a semen analysis.

I do know a few girls who had severe male factor issues and conceived using IUI's . all hope is not lost.

My DH had the surgery and he had a longer recovery than expected. He actually said if he had to do it again he wouldn't. He saw no improvement in his sperm count.
Remember though it really only takes one sperm cell. We used DH's frozen sperm (the vials had low numbers all around: count, motility, and mobility). We now have a 15 month old DS.

Make factor is one of the better easier fixes. Drs have greater success when its male issues. GL.

I would have to disagree. Totally depends upon the couple and what the issue is. My dh had low and "bad" everything and it's not so easy to fix. The urologist tried clomid for 3 months and that didn't work. He then needed to go on intermuscular injections of HCG every other day for 9 months for us to even be able to use his sperm for IVF and even then it wasn't great (we ended up with one embie from 9 eggs retrieved).
My suggestion is make sure you see a urologist who knows what they are doing and you are open and honest that your main goal is to get his sperm to a point where you want to be able to do IVF. There are options in terms of not doing the surgery and the dr 'going in and getting the sperm" but that wouldn't happen unless the dr is sure his count/motility/etc is good enough to use for IVF or even better for IUI. I would suggest seeing a RE and having the RE and Urologist talk so there is a plan. This was super helpful to us that we were all on the same page.

This is definitely not true. We dealt with MFI and it took 3 years and 3 rounds of IVF to conceive DS (and they were actually never able to improve my DH's condition). I had no issues.

DH has extremely low motility, everything else is normal. We had 2 successful IUI's (actually only had the second because we lost the first baby at 8 weeks). I'm now 10w4d. I spoke to my RE about seeing a urologist but she didn't seem to think that there was anything to fix the motility issue, I would love to conceive naturally one day but that just may not be in our future. I will call a urologist one day.

We also have MF. I have one DD conceived via our first IVF and am currently expecting #2 from another IVF.
I have gotten pregnant on my own but each time it has ended in a chemical pregnancy.
DH did do the varicocele surgery a few years ago and for us we saw no improvement. DH also did clomid and with that we did see improvement. Also there are vitamins that he can take that can help. Good luck

I have included the list of vitamins a member posted a few years ago that helped increase her DH's sperm count. DH only takes a few of these (specifically coq10, l-carnetine, vit d, zinc and selemium) but his urologist has seen an improvement in his numbers from the pervious SA done in December.

We also dealt with male factor. My DH was put on Clomid long enough to see results when we wanted to try IVF like 6 months later. He also took supplements and we did do ICSI.

This list is great. Remember it takes sperm about 3 months to generate so you may not see results until after 3 months of taking the supplements.

I'm dealing with severe MF as well, the Urologist said they only way to get sperm from my husband would be to extract it, has anyone's DH done this? Mine freaked out and said your not slicing my balls open for sperm ugh

Yes, my husband went through this. It was incredibly painful for him. FM me any questions.
