The doctors I assisted all gave tiny injections of lidocaine in three places around the area. Then they waited 10 minutes to let it take complete effect. The one doctor explained that it just made her happier to know that they were nice and numb to not cause further distress. However I do know that many doctors use just topical numbing cream which works fairly well. The one problem I was told, is that some doctors don't wait long enough for numbing agents to work at full capacity, and that is where you'll see some babies have more distress than others.
Edited to add: For new moms who are opting to circumcise: Ask the person performing the circ what pain control they use, and if you're not happy with the answer you can specifically request that your son have a lidocaine injection. I didn't know to ask for any of that when I was having my sons, but after this clinical rotation I now know better. I know my sons did great and there really were no issues, its just nice to be equipped with info.

we definitely won't.. i always assumed I would just because it's the norm but after doing some research I decided that I'm not comfortable altering my son for no other reason than cosmetics..

We definitely would. I'm going to be honest and tell you that one of my exes was uncircumcised and I just thought aesthetically it was ugly. I know thats a shallow reason, but thats it for me.
I agree, I don't even have to look into reasons why our why not.

For those BTDT moms- how was the recovery after the procedure? How long was the poor thing all red and open wound? I always assumed i would do it, automatically, but now I think of my little one being hurt, it scares me.

I circumcised all 3 of my boys. DH was pretty adament about that which was fine with me. I wasn't there when my OB did it, thank god. He did it in the nursery and when they brought them to me no one was crying.
Recovery was not bad at all. I remember they said we just had to pull back the skin periodically to make sure it doesn't get stuck until it heals, put Vaseline on it and cover it with a gauze during diaper changes. I want to say it was healed within about 2 weeks, maybe less.

I have three boys and their recoveries were fine! It looks kinda raw around the area for a few days but they never seemed to feel pain or act abnormally. Be very generous with petroleum jelly on a gauze pad with each diaper change and you're good to go. I would say it looked fully healed with each boy within 10 days-2 weeks. But after day 3 it's not as red and raw looking. It heals quickly!

If it's a boy, we will circumcise without a doubt.
I have a friend who did not with their son, and difficulty cleaning it led to such a bad infection, he needed surgery. I've also had an elderly family member develop a serious infection as it gets harder to clean when your older.

Both of my boys are circumcised. DH & all male family members are circumcised, so I never considered not doing it. I don't know a ton about the pros & cons, but I have heard it can prevent infections in the future. The healing wasn't bad at all. I would just pull the skin back often and put Vaseline on it, and that was pretty much it. He never seemed in pain from it either.

All 4 of my boys were circumcised. It was perfectly healed by the third/fourth day and never showed any signs of pain... never cried during diaper changes at all, even though I had to change the dressing every time. They had me put a piece of gauze with Vaseline on top at every diaper change.

It's more than just a cosmetic procedure. Do your research and make an informed decision for your son. The CDC stated last year that the benefits of a circumcision outweigh any risks. cdc

Both of my boys are circumcised, I really have no idea how they did it because my OB took the baby to the nursery both times. Recovery was about a week. They both had a very red penis. I would just put a glob if Vaseline on it at each diaper change.

Took a few days and was pretty easy to care for. It was a small wound (smaller than I had imagined) and looked better by the time we took him home.

Yes. For health and cosmetic reasons. Baby boy was absolutely fine after the procedure. I've never heard of man who was upset that his parents had it done when he was a baby. I have heard the opposite though. There's no right or wing answer, do what you think is right.
Eta: recovery wasn't bad. Penis was red. Put Vaseline on it for about a week. Redness went down is about 2-3 days. He didn't seem in pain.

Wow. I honestly would insist on cream at least being used but that is just me. And despite what anyone might say, there is going to be pain involved with nothing used. It may be a cultural norm but I don't understand it.
Ok..just had to research this a bit cause I was curious. It seems prior to the 1980's not many mohels used anesthetic as it was thought infants don't feel pain. Now that we know different, and they do feel pain the same as adults, many now use lidocaine cream 15 mins prior to the Bris. I guess not all use it, but many do. I know I'd be insisting like crazy that it be used!!

I guess the other thread got pulled? I had my son circumcised. It was done by my ob a day after he was born. He was fine right after and it healed quickly.
Whether you do or don't is your own choice. I don't pass judgement on others for it.

We had a bris for my DS in August. The mohel we used prescribed a numbing cream (EMLA cream, with lidocaine in it) for him. We had to put it on him about half an hour before the ceremony and cover it with saran wrap to keep it on.
We actually had to call 3 mohels because the first 2 were booked for our date. One insisted on using no numbing agent (he said the healing would be slower) and two insisted on using it. So it depends on who you use.
Btw, DS cried during the procedure, but he screamed the same every time we changed his diaper back then. And when it was done, he settled down in about a minute. He was a little sleepier than usual for the next 24 hours, but that's it. Oh, and the penis is bright red and scary looking for the first day or two (I was NOT prepared for that!) but it didn't seem to bother him at all. We just globbed A&D or Bacitracin over it at every diaper change for a week until it was totally flesh-colored again.
