For those that dye your hair...
So, at 38 years old, I had my hair highlighted for the first time in my life. The hairdresser told me that the grays were really taking over and knew I was nervous to dye, so she suggested highlights.
I have auburn hair and brought pics of caramel highlights. When she was finished, I thought I liked it. But the salon was definitely dark. After I got home and saw my hair I was horrified-it was extremely stripey and brassy looking and the highlights looked pure yellow and orange.
I ended up going to a different salon a few days later that was known for their color corrections, and I believe thy put a glaze over the whole thing and it looked soooooo much better. They then told me to come back around New Years to see how the highlights are growing out and to get something more permanent.
I now washed my hair for the first time and can't believe how much the glaze or whatever it was already faded! It's not as bad as it was, but the highlights are definitely majorly peeking through again.
Any thoughts from anyone that knows more about this stuff than I do? Should I go back to the salon sooner to get the more "permanent" solution? Or is that too damaging to my hair? By the way, the best part of this whole thing is that I can still see all of my grays, And that was the whole point of getting the highlights!

Ugh I feel ya. I've tried getting highlights in my hair several times and I've never been happy with the outcome. You can ask them to put more toner in to make the highlights darker. Now I just stick to a single process to cover up my grays. I'm done with highlights.

I do highlights. I recommend the hair painting- not a stripy and faded/ blends well with hair. I get a good 4-5 months out of it. I recommend either hairstories in Babylon or Paris salon in stony brook. I go to Paris now that I live in port Jeff but had highlights (hair painting) at both!

I have been getting highlights to cover my grays for almost 6 years and have always been very happy with the way it looks. My hairstylist always does a glaze as part of the process. Yes, the color changes pretty quickly from the day it is done, but from the beginning, I've always told the stylist that I do not want anything that looks stripey or "chunky" and she's always done a great job. Even when the highlights fade, it still looks natural. I go to JP at Self Image Salon in Amityville and couldn't say enough good things about her

With highlights you are always going to see gray in the parts of the hair that was not highlighted.
To get full gray coverage you would need to do your other roots also with a color product...Going light (highlights) tends to camouflage the gray...going darker will make them show up more.

With highlights you will still sees grays. Highlights are randomly spread throughout and doesn't cover every gray. You would need to dye your roots with maybe a semi permanent dye. This way you get all the grays and your roots are covered.

Shampoo is key. If you use cheapo products your hair is shit. I use T. Carltons shampoo and it makes my hair last longer.

Call the salon and express your concerns. They should offer a solution.

I just went through the exact same thing exactly and I did the hair painting. Took about a month for it to get how I want it and still needs a lot of maintenance . The first time the glaze was out before I even washed it. The second time lasted two weeks. Hoping this time even longer. They put a good conditioning treatment before the glaze to help it and it helped. Also they left the glaze on an extra ten minutes. The maintenance now makes me not want to do it again. As of now I'm ok with it and kind of like it but now every three weeks I get roots done and I get reapplication of glaze. It kinda sucks.

Also now I cut washing my hair down to twice a week to make the glaze last longer.
