Activities/Sports for Special Needs

Where can I find activities or sports programs In Nassau for my DS? I feel bad that my older son has different sports and activities that he participates in and my little guy is not signed up for anything b/c I fear that his autism will be distracting or he won't follow directions.

I think socialization can only help him. Any suggestions?

I live in Suffolk, but I'm always finding things in Nassau that are too far for us. I know the JCC in Plainview has a huge abundance of programs for children with special needs. I wish we had what they have in Suffolk! Swimming, cooking, sports, etc.

I just talked to someone from The Family Center for Autism, its in Garden City and they have classes & activities for different age groups 2 and up. If you want the info of the woman I spoke with let me know. You can check out the classes at the link below:

ETA you don't have to be a member but you would pay non member prices for the class/es you want. Which is probably what I am going to do in my case if I sign DS up for something.

I just looked up this center and wow it looks awesome. I wish they had something like this a little closer to me (I live in Queens).

I would love to take my 2 1/2 year old to a class. We tried Gymboree over the summer (before he was diagnosed) and needless to say it was a disaster.Chat Icon

Activities/Sports for Special Needs

I'm not sure of the age of your son but reach out to your school and your district's SEPTA page because normally they will have a listing of activities in the area. There are so many sports activities on the Island, more so in Nassau. There are baseball programs, lacrosse, music classes, art classes. Alot of places - Like gymboree (but not gymboree) have special needs times for children.
