question about flying to orlando

We are a family of 5 and are looking to fly to Orlando the last week in June with DH's family. There would be 16 of us total. Right now I'm seeing flights out of islip for 500-700 a person. 3500 is a lot to pay for a family of 5. We already have a hotel. MIL has three rooms with her timeshare. So we just need flights and a minivan. My question is, if we wait until closer, do flights generally go down in price? Or the longer we wait, will the prices only go up? I'm not sure what to do. TIA!

Those prices are very high. I'm flying to Orlando next Friday from JFK for under $200/person. Check JFK and LGA pricing.

That's what I thought. We did check LGA and JFK too and they were pretty high too. We are going to wait and keep checking all three airports. Thank you!

Prices can drop, you have to watch closely. But generally the closer you get the more $$. We fly to Ft. Myers a few times a year and book way in advance on JetBlue.

The thing that made me angry with JetBlue that I found out recently is that the previous policy was that if your flight price dropped and you already booked, they gave you credit for the difference. Now you only have 14 days to get a credit from the day you book. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Playing around with dates can make a big difference. We are going to Orlando next month, and flying home on a Tuesday instead of Monday was half the price.

Re: question about flying to orlando

Last year we flew to Orlando Easter week and we ended up flying from LGA because even with a car service, it was so much cheaper than Islip. We're a family of 5 also, so I feel your pain.

ETA: I also despise Southwest Airlines, so I would rather fly pretty much any other airline, which always influences my decision!

Flying from Islip can be more than double. It's absolutely insane. Sometimes it pays to suck it up and fly out of one of the nyc airports.
It's really a shame how they rape you just to fly out of our long island airport. And they wonder why that airport is not living up to its potential.

Re: question about flying to orlando

We just got airfare to FLL the end of June and it was about $400/pp out of Islip.

They can get away with charging the higher prices because their the only major airline out of that airport. There's no competition. You're paying more for the convenience.

Southwest is recording record profits, so I am sure they are hitting whatever potential they are setting. The mass majority of the demographic who want to fly out of that airport want to go to FL, so Southwest has that market cornered. Flights I take out of that airport are booked constantly, and I fly out of that airport at least 8 times a year to FL.

Any flights to Orlando when school is out will cost more. Last year I flew to west palm in July for $120 pp each way. Cheap.

Re: question about flying to orlando

If you are flying in June I would definitely wait to book. I'm in FL (and my parents visit several times a year) and I book my parents' tickets 3-4 weeks in advance, at Christmas time I booked 2 months in advance. Check surrounding airports too. Sometimes the price difference can be worth the drive.

That's crazy!! We flew to Orlando out of MacArthur and paid about $240/each round trip but we went at the end of October. Maybe it's so high because of the time of year you're going, schools are letting out and it's the first wave of summer vacations.

This is more of what we are hoping to pay! Unfortunately this is the only time that the entire family can get together and go. I'd rather not go during the summer.

Thank you everyone, we will keep looking and are definitely looking at the other two airports as well. MacArthur would just be so convenient so we are hoping to go from there. I also HATE flying. I had a panic attack just thinking about flying when we were all discussing it yesterday and I've never flown with the kids before so my fear is even worse now. I'm hoping we can all get a flight together so the family can help DH with my three kids because I will be useless. It's 5 months away and I'm already having anxiety about it Chat Icon

Re: question about flying to orlando

I also hate that they don't fly to Miami and now there are also no direct flights to Vegas from Islip anymore I heard.
I love tbe convenience of that airport but not for $2k for 3 of us to fly to Florida.
Nornally I am all about "time is money" and convenience is worth a LOT to me, but I just couldn't justify it this time.

We did fly them last year to Florida and the price was ok. This year I guess I picked a bad week.

We've taken the train once with our niece and nephew before we had kids and I just can't do it again. I have to talk to the family and see what they think about flying to another airport close to Orlando. Ideally I'd like to all fly together because dh won't be able to handle me withbmy anxiety and three little kids. We are going to look at all options. Thanks all!

With the time being so far away, I am sure the prices will go down. It fluctuates so much so I would wait. If I find it is so much more to Fla on Southwest, I always check out JFK. I know JetBlue has a lot of flights and sometimes so much cheaper than Islip.
