Kind of strange situatuon - would this bother you, and how would you handle it?

Some backstory: We have an outdoor cat, about 8 years ago she adopted us, you could say. Someone in a basement apartment in our neighborhood had been abusing her, and then moved away and abandoned her. DH and I started feeding her bc she was so sweet. But we couldn't take her in bc we already had other pets and a very small house. So no way to keep the cats separated and didn't feel it was fair to my aging sickly cat. And then once I had my dd, and now another baby coming soon, we don't want an indoor cat at this point in our lives. But we have always fed her diligently and in the winter she has a very insulated little dog house to stay warm in. She's always seemed perfectly content. In case anyone's wondering, we haven't brought her to a shelter bc we worry that she will just be put to sleep.

So, lately, someone in our neighborhood has been taking it upon themselves to start feeding our cat, on our property. They leave paper plates with cat food, Styrofoam cups, wet food cans, and even the sharp metal tops of the cans, all in our yard. Not on the curb or in the street, but all the way up in our yard. And they never pick up the old plates and cans. The littering is annoying, but the metal lids is especially upsetting bc 3 year old DD could come across one and slice her hand open. We don't know who is doing it, as we haven't caught them yet. They always seem to do it late at night. Are we right to be annoyed? We don't even know why they're doing this since we always feed cat. If they looked at our porch, they would see her bowls, and usually a plate or two that recently had wet food.

Do you think putting out a No trespassing sign would be enough of a hint to whoever is doing it? Or do we need to sit and wait til We see them and go ask them to stop? I think it's kind of weird that they want to feed our cat, but I don't really have a problem with it, as long as they don't litter and leave metal lids in our yard.

That's odd..maybe the tenant moved back and is feeding the cat.
A No Trespassing sign is not a bad idea.
Do you have a fenced in yard?

It really is so odd! We can't figure out what kind of person is doing this. I don't think it would be the tenant who originally owned her, because she moved away about 7 years ago, and at the time she wasn't feeding the cat at all, she was just skin and bones, which is why we started feeding her in the first place. So I don't think she would come back now and go out of her way to start feeding her.

Our front yard is not fenced in, but we have kind of a natural border along the front, with a row of bushes and small trees on a mound that runs the entire width of the yard, so someone is walking around that and coming into the grass part of our yard to leave the plates and cans of food. And they never pick up what they left the last time if it's still sitting there.

Leave a sign, saying that you appreciate their feeding the cat, but to not leave sharp edges, and that you have also been feeding this cat, so you would be happy to coordinate the feeding as to not over feed and harm the cat. I would take it to the vet for a spay and neuter.

She has been spayed, thankfully, because the last thing we want is to end up with litters of cats on our property. Thsts another reason this is bothering us, because plate of cat food left all over our yard could attract other stray cats.

I was joking about tenant :). Definitely bizzare someone would enter your yard to feed a cat that is being taken care of already and leaving trash. May be it's a neighbor..have you told anyone about the cat? Could be they are trying to help.

I would make a liTitle sign where they have been leaving the food saying please do not feed the cat. My neighbor did it when a dog kept pooping on his lawn and the owner wouldn't pick up after it.

Our neighbors know about the cat, as she's very friendly and makes her rounds to "say hello" to them. They know we feed her, though.,so I don't think they would start feeding her, and especially not on our property and leaving behind sharp metal, since they know we have a toddler.

She's such a friendly cat that people walking by often stop to play with her since she goes right up to people in the street and lets them pet her. So it could be anyone who has walked by our house in the past few months. I just think it's weird and so rude that they don't just feed her in the street instead of coming into our yard and littering it.

This is what I would do. Then I would address it with the person directly.

I agree with this. The other worry is that leaving out too much food could also attract other animals who may harm the cat like raccoons or an opossum. Perhaps you guys can take turns or come to an agreement -- or you can just continue feeding the cat and they no longer have to. I'm assuming these people started putting food out thinking that she was NOT being fed by someone else. Maybe they assumed she was in your yard for the shelter? Meaning, the dog igloo. So if you put a sign making them aware that she is not only getting the shelter, but food also they would probably stop.

This morning there's another plate and cup a good 30-40 feet into our property, behind a second row of bushes, near where the cats house is. This means someone is just making themselves at home on our property, coming right up to our house to see the cat. I'm actually getting really mad now. What are our rights as far as trespassing laws go? This isn't a petting zoo.

Did you try the sign?? Stating that someone is feeding the cat and that they do not need to also feed the cat?

I'm thinking maybe it's a kid... like a 12ish year old kid that just sees a cat and wants to help and gets the food from home because they have other pets and has cat food around the house. I love animals and growing up I always tried to help/feed animals I saw.

I will try the sign today. I can't imagine that someone doesn't realize we're feeding the cat, as they can plainly see the food bowls and plates on our porch, especially if they're coming right up to the house now. Also, they put a bowl right at the entrance of the cats house. So they know it's got cat beds and blankets in it that we purposely put there for her. Its not just a random shelter she found.. I would think even a kid would know better than to go all the way on someone's property and leave behind litter.

That's creepy. I would stay up one night and see who it was and go out and confront them and nicely but firmly explain why you dont need them to do that.

That would really freak me out. How does this person know that a cat and cat house is even back there? I think I would put up cameras or wait for the person. I would wonder about their mental stability though, that is a really bizarre thing to do. I hope you can make it stop, one way or another. I'd be strongly considering a talk locked fence and surveillance system.

It really is freaking us out at this point, and we keep finding more and more plates each day, yet have never seen anyone leaving them, so they must be coming late at night, which makes me think it's not a kid.

We put up a sign and set up the video camera from dds nursery to face the yard. Hope to put an end to this soon.
