House in one town but school district another??
We are looking at houses in Lynbrook and aa lot go to Malverne SD. Explain to me why?? We would be in Lynbrook town, paying Lynbrook taxes but do not get to go to that school? Is there a way to change SD?

Re: House in one town but school district another??
Welcome to the wacky world of Long Island real estate where your property value is pretty much determined mostly on school district. This is why houses vary so much in price -Lynbrook homes zoned for Malverne schools may be lower than those zoned for Lynbrook schools. There are many towns where you will see this: for example Rockville Centre may have homes zoned for either Oceanside schools or Baldwin schools, so you must always check before buying a home.
There is no way to change the school district once you buy a home zoned for a particular SD.

Ugh. This is terrible! Why pay the high taxes for not the school? It makes no sense?? Why should I pay for a school I can't go to!?!

School taxes are paid to the school district that you are in so if your house is zoned for that school your school taxes are going to that school regardless of the town. That's my understanding anyway.

My sister and I both live in Lynbrook, but are in east rockaway school district.
Lynbrook houses are zoned to go to lynbrook, malverne, east rockaway or valley stream schools depending on where in lynbrook.

House in one town but school district another??
This happens in a lot of towns. Commack SD has kids from parts of E. Northport, parts of Dix Hills and parts of Smithtown. Meanwhile other parts of Dix Hills go to Half Hollow Hills East or West; Other areas of Smithtown go to Smithtown SD. In parts of Commack, the kids go to Hauppauge schools. It happens all over LI.

My stepdaughter attended lynbrook schools from 1st grade thru graduation in 2012. I will say for the school/property taxes (including village) there I was not that impressed but that is where her mother grew up so that's where they lived. At that time the disctrict really lacked diversity although I think that's changing slightly. I prefer less homogenous settings. I didn't get the hype for it being such a great disctrict. She had friends that lived in Hewlett, I believe a tiny slice of east rockaway and lynbrook that attended lynbrook high school. My business office is in malverne so in very familiar with that area.

This is very common. But, you will pay the school taxes for the school that you're zoned for.

As others said, this is common. I believe you can search by school district though on MLSLI if you have a specific preference.

My town is different from my school district, my school taxes are based on school district, not town.

Yes, you can. We were only concerned with being in a particular SD, not what town our mailing address would be. So that was how we searched.

This is common. You have to check carefully before purchasing. Most of the time of the taxes are lower, it's the less desirable district.

Same. There are parts of 3 towns that go to my school district. When we bought, we searched MLSLI by school.

Well, not always. Homes zoned for Westbury schools and East Meadow schools pay similar taxes, but most would agree that EMSD is more desirable. Taxes all over LI are crazy.

Re: House in one town but school district another??
You can live in parts of Lynbrook incorporated, Lynbrook unincorporated, East Rockaway, Hewlett or Hewlett Harbor and go to Lynbrook schools. You can call the district office for a particular address when house hunting to see if you are zoned for Lynbrook schools. Taxes in the incorporated village of Lynbrook will be higher because Lynbrook has its own police and sanitation services. You get what you pay for. HTH!

Re: House in one town but school district another??
It is not just LI either. I am in Putnam County and I know there are kids in Carmel schools (also Putnam) who live in Dutchess County so they are in a different town and a different county. Same with the area by the Westchester border, there are kids in Brewster who attend school in North Salem. And because this area is more rural, some towns do not have schools at all. They attend in one of the neighboring towns/districts.
