if you have had a root canal...

I had emergency root canal on friday. tooth is still sore to the touch and i cant chew, but i havent been able to eat on that side for a month anyway, so im used to that.

however, I have this funky taste in my mouth all the time since then though..is this normal? I dont have an infection. I read it could be the temp filling settling in or something.

i've never had one before so I have no idea what is normal or not?

I recall a funky taste. It went a way a few days later.

Infections will radiate pain and I would assume taste horrible not funky but down right disgusting. However given that it's a dig around there's a lot of blood and scabby stuff so copper taste and funk is to be expected. Does that make sense?

Pain is expected but radiating pain isn't. That kind of pain that pulses and you can nearly feel it trace down your capillaries? Stuff that nothing makes it better, no ice, no drug.. yeah that's an infection you run to a doctor for like as fast as your feet can take you.

Wishing you both fast recoveries

ok..thanks. that makes sense. I dont have any more pain. Its sore to the touch and I cant really chew anything harder than a pancake..but they told me i wouldnt be able to chew for a few days.

I had the radiating pain for weeks before the surgery..3 trips to the dentist and couldnt figure it out b/c I was feeling it in various places. In any case that throbbing and sensitivity are gone now. yay!

if you have had a root canal...

My root canal was nasty.. scheduled and all that jazz.. but not pretty. They said it was fine.. but the pain never went away. 10yrs of that crud. Finally they found out they didn't get all the root and it splintered and was like a split end hair end.. which wouldn't have mattered except they also managed to crack what was left of my tooth that holds the root in a perfectly straight paper cut manner so every time I'd chew or move it just right the searing pain would hurt. Caused me to chew on the other side enough that I had to get a crown on my opposite side. Finally a new doc sent me to a specialist who said I need it pulled completely. Shocker.

But after 10yrs I just can't afford it (kid has more bills). That radiating pain? Oh I get it all the TIME! but infections I've had those too and its a whole new level of misery to be sure. Once I finally put my foot down I'll get this monster yanked. I was going to this past year (at the end of the year) but ended up with Brain MRI and severe vertigo. *sigh* so now I'm back at square one.

I swear I've put plenty of kids through college based on my dental bills alone! haha Always cracks me up that they say what lovely clean and healthy teeth I have .. yah sure.. dig deeper buddy... I've had work.. TONS of work, need more. But I will say.. switching to water and cutting all soda has actually improved my dental health a lot.

if you have had a root canal...

I just had Part 2 of a root canal done thurs, and permanent crowns placed. He removed the remaining roots. The intense pain and throbbing is gone, however like you, I can't chew on that side of my mouth near the tooth. I think the weird taste is normal, for a couple days, but it shouldn't be foul. I'm on amoxicillin for 7 days and Motrin 800 for the swelling and inflammation in the canals. Are you taking any rx? It was very invasive and intensive appt. my left side of face is bruised. Dental work is the worst!!!

Yes! Just as my tooth finally calmed down, although I couldn't chew on it, it was time to go back for part 2. Here I am again, very uncomfortable and dealing with the pain all over again. Good luck!!!!!!!

The funny taste is either the cement used, what was used to irrigate the tooth, or the crown. Is it like a metallic taste?

The discomfort is because a lot of trauma just occurred to that tooth, as well as needing to keep your mouth open for an extended period. It should feel better in a few days.

It's probably the medicine put into the root.
