hard poop & blood in toddler stool? advice please
I have no idea what to do anymore. DS has blood in his stool almost every time he goes. He has always either gone everyday or every other day. I took him to the Ped with a sample & she said that because the blood is bright & along the outside (sorry tmi) that it's new blood & most likely from a tear near the end of rectum. The kids hates vegetables. I have tried giving him probiotics and benefiber almost everyday for the past month in hopes to soften his stool but it's not working. All those things are doing is causing him to go to the bathroom almost immediately but not making it softer. What else can I do?

Miralax! Life saver for my DD. It takes a day or 2, but then they GO! And they go nice and soft. And it's not like a laxative where they are running to the bathroom right after.
1/2 capful in her juice every day until she goes. Then I slowed it to every other day until she was regular. She doesn't need it anymore but anytime she gets backed up, it's a life saver!

I was going to say he's constipated and he's bleeding bc the poop is so hard. You need a stool softener not just a laxative.
They have special kid ones.

Like a kid's suppository? I'm going to look some up on amazon.

I used Pedi-lax too with my DD. I had gotten the liquid ones. I gave it to her and within a hour she went.

I just looked up the reviews on the liquid one & so many people say it smells & tastes terribly. Did you find that? I will still buy it & put it in OJ.

I agree about the softener. and moving forward, I would give him something to keep it soft. this will allow the area to heal. you want something that will bring water into the colon. miralax is one option. we use prune juice as a more natural alternative, which has the same effects. increase water intake as well. he could be dehydrated.

I'd probably go to a ped gastro just to rule anything else out.

I'm dealing with the same issue. Give him MORE Benefiber. It sounds like you're not giving him enough. You're better off giving him too much than not enough. I put a ton in my DH sippy cup every morning. He goes shortly after and it's soft. Sprinkle it on his food and try to give him water.

exactly this. DD is almost 3 and still suffers from constipation. Miralax is a miracle

The one that I had given her was a liquid glycerin suppository. The liquid went up her butt. I had no idea that they had liquid ones for them to swollow..I probably would've tried that one first!

Ouch, I'm sorry your son is dealing with that. DS had problems with hard poop for a little bit.
This oat bran cereal is what worked for him, it actually tastes good so he loved eating it (you can buy it at fairway). I mix fruit puree in with it to sweeten it: oat bran cereal
Along with a bottle of apple or pear juice, and the hard poops were gone. Make sure he's getting enough liquids cause too much fiber and not enough liquids will make it worse.

I used pedia-lax too but used the chewables. DD took them with no problem and was pooping fine that same day. She used to have the same problem. Then she started holding her poop in for days because it was too painful for her to poop, which made it worse. She hasn't had a problem since.

Sigh... this is our life. Miralax worked but caused uncontrollable poops.... we are going to a gastro in hopes to figure it all out.

Fiber one brownies...my kids think it is a treat/dessert. They make yummy products that help. We have also used miralax to get things started at regular intervals and then used brownies to keep stuff regular.
