Need advice ASAP - Just got back from the doctor - UPDATED with blood work results
So I went today to my gyno, who confirmed that I have PCOS. He quickly showed me the cysts on my ovaries with the sonogram picture and told me that my blood work confirms that my hormones are out of balance. I asked him what he meant by that, and he basically blew me off. He asked when we wanted to TTC and I told him sooner than later. His advice, put me on BC (YAZ) and go off of it when I'm ready and then we'll address the issue. ***? He DID NOT explain my hormone levels, insuliln, etc., DID NOT go into detail about what I should be doing (diet wise), NOTHING. Even after I asked. I told him I didn't want to go on BC and he pretty much wouldn't take no for an answer. I left there hysterical. Please tell me that this isn't the correct "protocol" for addressing this issue. I MADE him give me a copy of my blood work, and I have NO idea what any of it means. Could someone help me? I'm sitting here hysterical and I don't know what to do. ETA: Should I make an appointment with an RE asap?

Re: Need advice ASAP - Just got back from the doctor..
I'm sorry . IMO that was completely unprofessional but I do know that many gyns are not capable/equipped to treat PCOS properly and may therefore blow you off. I'd make an appointment with an RE asap, search this board for recommendations if you want.
Feel free to post your results and maybe some of us can help you understand them.

Re: Need advice ASAP - Just got back from the doctor..
BC won't fix the problem- it will just mask it until you go off of it- If it were me I would be finding myself a reproductive endocronologist AsAp.
They did the same thing to me when I was in college. Don't listen to them. You want to take this time to make your lifestyle changes. Where do you live? Maybe we can make some recommendations. Please don't be upset- I know it's hard but use your feelings of sadness and turn them into something positive!!! Use that energy to research PCOS and be in control of you- you dr doesn't seem to be very educated on PCOS. I went thru 8 drs before finding my RE and i wouldn't trade him.

Re: Need advice ASAP - Just got back from the doctor..
If you want to TTC - I would go straight to an RE. Most Gyno's don't know how to handle PCOS and especially if you say you aren't TTC right now...they will almost always use the quick fix of BCP's. Good luck.

Re: Need advice ASAP - Just got back from the doctor..
Just wanted to add that even if you are not planning to TTC right now, there are many things you can do to get your PCOS under control so that you may have an easier time once you decide to TTC - like taking Metformin and/or making changes to your diet, etc. Going on BCP will not do anything but make you have AF for the time being and not change the underlying problem at all.
Good luck.

Re: Need advice ASAP - Just got back from the doctor..
I'm sorry to hear you were treated like that.
DEFINITELY see an RE. I just went about two weeks ago, and she gave me a course of action and answered all of my questions.
As far as the BCP, I was told that whenever I'm not TTC, I should be taking them. I agree with that, because it's the one surefire way to keep the hormones in check. Right now, I'm about to start on Clomid & Metformin because we're TTC #1.
Best of luck, definitely make that appointment asap!

Re: Need advice ASAP - Just got back from the doctor..
I cannot thank you girls enough for all of your advice. I finally calmed down. I called my friend who had infertility issues (she now has adorable twins!) and she gave me the name of her RE (who she loves) and I called and got an appointment for two weeks from now. I already feel better.
I just couldn't believe how my doctor brushed me off like that. Completely unprofessional - needless to say, I will not be going to him again.
I am going to post my blood results - they mean absolutely nothing to me because I cannot understand them. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Need advice ASAP - Just got back from the doctor - UPDATED with blood work results
OK well then first off and no offense here but your Dr SUX! This bloodwork(except for the thyroid should ONLY be taken on CD 3) He should give you provera to bring on a period and then take your blood again. Hormones change throughout the month and this bloodwork means nothing. I am not a Dr but this is common knowledge in teh IF world- Do not walk RUN away from this Dr and find someone who knows what they are doing

Re: Need advice ASAP - Just got back from the doctor - UPDATED with blood work results
Your FSH:LH ratio is indicative of PCOS - it's supposed to be about 1:1 and an LH level higher than the FSH level is classic PCOS.
The good news is that your FSH level is low, which is a good indicator of egg quality/quantity. Anything under 6 is supposed to be very good and means you probably have a good ovarian reserve.
HTH. Next steps, in my opinion, should be Provera to get a period so you can have proper CD3 testing. Then a fasting glucose test to see how your insulin levels are - to determine if you are insulin resistant and Metformin could help.

Thank you so much for your honesty!! I already ran from this doctor and WILL not be going back. I can't believe he didn't even explain this to me. So how can he diagnose PCOS from this then? My sonogram also revealed cysts on my ovaries...

Thank you for the info. Should I be concerned that my LH level is so much higher than my FSH level?
He gave me a script for provera, but then wants me to start the pill. I am not taking the pill again.
I made an appointment with an RE and will take the provera after speaking with him so that proper testing can be done on CD 3.

Carolyn from what I know(and I am no expert in PCOS trust me) this bloodwork could be totally different when taken on CD 3....therefore these numbers do not show anything. As they stand now Carolyn is right....lbut I would not assume you have PCOS untilk you have CD 3 BW. GL!

Thanks for the info - I REALLY appreciate it. I guess since I had the sonogram that showed the small cysts on my ovaries, it confirmed my diagnosis. However, I will insist on having more accurate blood work done.

I can not believe there are still doctors out there that put women on BCP for PCOS
if we can do the research and know that is not the answer, why can't they

My LH is always high, no matter where I am in my cycle. I would get CD3 testing though, to be sure.
