At ehat age/grade do you think it's OK ...

to stop inviting the whole class (or just the boys) and start inviting by who my son actually WANTS to be at his party, who he's friendly with etc.

I'm not asking what I CAN do - I know, if I put the invitations in the mail I can technically do whatever I want -

But when do you think it's OK/expected to start doing this?

I'll be perfectly honest, I think it's always ok to do this. I have never bought into the idea of inviting the whole class, not even when they were in preschool. And now that my kids are a little older, I don't even do kids parties anymore. They get their bday gift from me and DH, we have the whole family over for dinner and cake, and we go on a trip. I will also let them pick 1-2 friends to bring on a fun play date like the movies, bowling, Bily Beez, etc...

It definitely started becoming the norm in 2nd grade. Kids have so many friends between sports, scouts, friends in other classes and family friends.

Thank you!
That's what's happening this year in 1st grade, and it's just too much! Chat Icon Chat Icon

I've never invited the whole class (or all of the boys), so I'd say at any grade you can do it, specially if your DS is old enough to know who he really wants in his party.

I did it for DS in kindergarten - he still is tight with his daycare friends (he sees them at aftercare) so he preferred to have them at his party over most of his class.

Dd's is in k. We only invited the girls in her class to her party. It would have been way too many kids with all of them. And I mailed out the invites so none of the kids knew.
