Paying Cash to Real Estate Broker

I recently met with a broker to rent an apartment. We are supposed to sign the lease in a few days and the broker asked that we pay her fee in cash. Is this normal?

Cash as opposed to credit card? Or cash as opposed to a check? I've always paid broker fees for apts by check. It's usually quite a large sum of money.

My memory is a little fuzzy, but I think I was asked to pay in cash.

Cash as opposed to a check. I did meet her at her office though so I'm thinking it's legit. I was just surprised.

I'm sure it is legit but I would pay with a check. I like to have my own paper trail.
My first thought is she might not want to claim the money.

That's what I was thinking, too. Or she's hiding something from her broker. If she's a legit agent, she'd have to split commission with her broker, too. I'd personally pay by check. Let her do her own shady business.

No way would I pay by cash. You need to pay by check at a minimum and get a paper receipt. I would also look up the broker to see if there are complaints against him or her.

Maybe she's had to deal with bounced checks? Regardless I'd pay with a check.

Cashiers check only... Dont give your agent an option. Its either cashiers check or nothing. I just read of an agent that scams people in Astoria and he had a legit office and everything.

Re: Paying Cash to Real Estate Broker

When my office does rentals, we only accept a bank check or cash as our fee (no personal checks). It's actually standard practice, and one that my broker insists upon (and most professional, experienced agents would follow).

But there would be no reason not to accept a bank check. The concern is a personal check bouncing, which isn't a concern with a bank check.

And obviously, we don't ask a tenant to pay a fee until we are signing the lease with the landlord and turning over keys.

I have rented a few apartments and have never paid in cash. Its always been a personal check. I would tell them you can have a bank check written up.
