1st trimester constipation & gas
I remember having this with DS early on too. I was put on Zofran earlier this week, but the constipation started before even that, but I know it's contributing to the issue. I literally have not been able to go in 5 days and at times I'm doubled over in gas pain. If you've experienced this during pregnancy, what have you tried that has helped? Between this and the all day MS, it's been a rough start

Ask your OB if you can take Colace. I didn't need it for my first trimester but I needed it for my 3rd during my last pregnancy. It's very gentle and it really does help. If you don't want to take any medication, try high fiber foods and lots of water. Feel better!

1st trimester constipation & gas
I had a very specific regimen: a bottle of water, piece of fruit and big bowl of frosted mini wheats. Colace made me cramp and I didn't like the feeling.
It is AWFUL, I know how you feel.

Lemon water helps tremendously with gas pain. Colace and citrucel are on my list of approved medication.

Re: 1st trimester constipation & gas
Thanks ladies! I've been trying to drink more water (although I know I still don't drink enough...its hard to keep down right now). I will definitely try the mini wheats for breakfast and I'll try the Colace. Its horrible...all I'm able to get out are a few tiny little nuggets but its SO painful and the gas pains make me feel just terrible.

The worst! Water, lots of green vegetables and walking helped for me.
Hang in there. It does get lot better in a few weeks.

I didn't even think of this. I always drink coffee normally and it keeps me very regular. I switched to decaf when I found out I was pregnant, but then soon stopped drinking it altogether because of my MS. Now that I'm on the Zofran, I'm okay in the mornings...I could probably tolerate decaf again.

the thing is, I think it's the caffeine that acts as a stimulant to your bowels and gets you going. Not sure it would be the same with decaf, but worth a shot

Hmm good point. I just took a Colace and I picked up some milk of magnesia. If I'm still not feeling great by tomorrow morning I'll try the regular coffee.

Yeah I think you need the caffeine. I definitely limited caffeine, but I felt better about a little caffeine then a lot of other meds, ya know? The amount in one cup of coffee isn't harmful. I could only tolerate coffee when I was on Zofran, and Zofran made me need coffee...
Hope you feel better soon!

Had this EXACT problem when pregnant with DS. I tried EVERYTHING. I finally took Miralax and it worked! So much relief! Good luck and feel better!

Re: 1st trimester constipation & gas
I took everyone's suggestions and I started taking Colace yesterday. I also took one round of Milk of Magnesia yesterday. And I upped my water intake.
I cant say that I got a ton of relief yet, but I was able to get some out between late last night and this morning. Enough that I'm not doubled over in pain like I was yesterday. I'm hoping it gets progressively better over the next few days.
This 1st trimester is no joke. It's kicking my @ss I keep telling myself it's just 5 more weeks until the 2nd trimester. Last time, once I hit the 2nd tri it was a world of a difference and I was like a new person. I hope it's the same this time
