Moving from NYC job to LI job- pros and cons

Got an interview on LI next week, but I'm only 1 year away from tenure in NYC. Is it worth risking my tenure and stability in the city to take a LI job that pays more, but with NO stability and having to restart the tenure process? Not to mention, I am pregnant and due in July- switching jobs in Sept will be very complicated and the adjustment will be difficult, but I will be so much closer to home.... Help!

I am wondering the same! Also year away from tenure in NYC and I do like my school. But would love to be closer to home. I am wondering if it is worth my time writing cover letters.

I'm a Long Islander who's been a NYC Teacher for the past 16 years. I commute from the Patchogue area to Rego Park, Queens daily. I used to try to get on LI years ago and then I decided it just wasn't worth the time and stress anymore. That being said, leaving a city job, especially when you ladies are up for tenure soon and risking that all to "try" and get a LI job in my personal opinion just isn't worth it anymore. Many LI school districts are closing buildings, and laying off. Stability to me has always kept me going as a city teacher(and I do love my school).

Thank you for the info, BabyLove08! I feel like I might be better off staying in the NYC system and transferring to a district 25/26 school through the open market instead. NYS finally completed my transfer of my Tier 4 retirement into the NYC TRS too, so it's going to be such a pain to transfer it all back. I do love our heath insurance plan here as well. Not having to pay for benefits is a really nice incentive for city teachers..

How much time would you regain if you took the LI job? My commute is about twenty minutes each way and I'm home with my son by 3:35. It's a huge benefit! My district hired five new teachers last year in my building alone so job security really depends on the district.

Good luck!!! If you were about to be given tenure you are obviously a good teacher,.,,you could certainly do it again.

thank you for the help- I actually got called for the high school in the same district and was able to schedule interviews for the same day for the HS and MS. I've talked it over with DH, and we decided that it made sense to just go for it and see what happens. I'm not expecting to get the job, as I know how difficult it is to snag a LI job, but if I were to be offered the job I will probably take it. I drive into Forest Hills now, which is about 30 mins in the morning, and 45-60 in the afternoon. Both schools I'm interviewing at are about 10 mins away
