Spinoff from raises: Pros/Cons of your job
What are some of the major perks of your job, especially if it does not frequently come with raises/bonuses/high salary? What are some of the cons?
Me:
Pros: Close to home. I can work from anywhere and don't have to go in the office. Company-paid laptop and Blackberry. Boss doesn't micromanage. Stability and I pretty much know what to expect at this point with my superiors, as well as the other staff. Ability to make bonuses. I don't have to get suited up or spend a lot on clothing for work. 401K Some of my co-workers
Cons:
Company does not pay for family healthcare and even a single person is still costly. I pay close to $20K a year for our family plan. The workload, expectations and clientele can be really stressful and well, even unrealistc at times. Some of my co-workers are a real PITA

Re: Spinoff from raises: Pros/Cons of your job
Pros:
Weather! LOL if it even thinks of snowing we shut down. Same for Ice and Hail.
Distance: I’m about 15 from door to door. Its actually a bit of a drive but its pretty easy.
Alcohol: Office supplies a stash. Requests are taken. I usually ask for Mikes Hard Lemonade Margarita. On any given day and generally after lunch (if not during) you can just pop one open. A beer near your desk is not shocking. A few beers near piles and piles of paper work at 4:30 is most likely a given.
Free soda, coffee (kurig) and Water bottles.
Everyone in my office with the exception of one has had children. So family time is never ignored. Kid sick? Get the heck out of here!
Free Office smart phone (pro and con considering you are always reachable and can always see your email) however it’s not a company phone in a sense that we can’t play with it, add what we want, etc. They only monitor the email program. The rest is maintained by TMobile directly so we can do what we want with it.
Cons:
I came here from ‘corporate’ and we acquired this company. So I’m STILL (three years later) treated like I know nothing.
Some coworkers here are just plain annoyingly dumb and frustrating. Wish she’d just retire or quit already
Pay is less and not as competitive as other places around. Raises are practically non-existent (tho they just got them back this past year)
Small office = nasty gossip
Pension was cut off the year before I qualified.
Weather Distance: you are close enough you SHOULD be here. It can be biblical rain, doesn’t matter, find a way and get here.
No titles. So even though I SHOULD be an AVP I won’t get that title here.

Re: Spinoff from raises: Pros/Cons of your job
Pros:
Flexibility with my schedule. No one is tracking if I work 40 hours a week once I get my work done. So some days I am in early, or days late. I works weekends rarely - like a Saturday twice year to catch up on stuff for mynown sanity and file away emails.
Working in a collaborative environment generally with smart people.
Laid back atmosphere. We are a young group and we're not stuffy.
Open door policy and ability to interact with Execs regularly. It's not like I have to go through my manager to get to hers.
Cons:
The commute. An hour door to door without stopping. If I stop for coffee, add 10 minutes.
Our benefits suck. I am so happy that my DH works in academia and has great benefits.
A lot of work for too few people. I never feel like I am on top of everything which stresses me out since I am a planner and totally type A.

Re: Spinoff from raises: Pros/Cons of your job
Pros:
Free tickets to almost all Broadway shows (and on occasion, getting to sit in on dress rehearsals!)
I get to go to the Tony Awards and usually have a good seat.
Great healthcare benefits; they cover my DH with no cost OOP for us.
The casts of shows regularly come to the office for visits/focus groups/meet and greets.
Cool (though sometimes odd) swag. My desk is full of whatever swag I can't eat.
I can attend some cool press events for new shows.
Life insurance.
Getting great seats for friends if they want to see shows.
401k
Commuter benefits.
Lots of fun parties...at least one a month. Just went to one last night before a show.
Having an 'in' at certain restaurants and bars because of where I work.
My bosses are pretty cool and kind of leave me to do my own thing. Not much micromanagement going on.
Cons:
Kind of a long commute (one hour on the subway) but it's only one line to take, so no transfers.
Sometimes my workload gets tedious and redundant.

Re: Spinoff from raises: Pros/Cons of your job
Cons: I'm unemployed a LOT, like 9/10 months at a time. They can send me to work in Staten Island, or the Bronx and commuting would be torture. No sick days.
Pros: I'm unemployed a LOT, like 9/10 months at a time. Salary. Over time is great money. Different locations each job. I work with mostly men. Sorry ladies, we are b!tches.

Re: Spinoff from raises: Pros/Cons of your job
Pros: I work from home 3 days a week, and have a very flexible schedule. If I want to workout or nap during the day, even on a day when I'm at work, that's totally fine. We even have a nap room at the office. Commute is only 30 minutes by car, and there's free parking. We have unlimited sick time. We have four weeks of vacation a year, including the week between Christmas and New Years when the office is closed. We have free healthy snacks in the office, and our boss often pays for lunch for everyone. We have 4% 401K matching, based on profit. Company pays 70% of healthcare costs. We get regular raises and bonuses. We get a free holiday party at a really nice restaurant and a company offsite at a beautiful resort. Company is laid-back, easygoing, and fun. It's not hierarchical at all, so as one of the lower-level employees, I can be in on a lot of the high-level strategic discussions. My co-workers are great, and we all get along really well. My direct supervisor and I have become really good friends, so I always enjoy working with her, and there's never any micromanaging.
Cons: I really can't complain at all. I miss getting 100% of healthcare paid for when my husband was at his last company, but the company I work for is tiny and that would be way too much to expect at this point.

Re: Spinoff from raises: Pros/Cons of your job
Pros: Good hours (8:30-3:30) Good built in vacations (school schedule) My own office Get to work with a population I love (preschoolers with special needs) 2% COLA "raise" each year 4%-6% holiday bonus Not a bad commute - 30-40 minutes during rush hour. Free healthcare & dental for me
Cons: Significantly underpaid for my field/degree Can't work from home No real maternity benefits Poor management/administration Would cost about 1/4 of my salary to add my child to my insurance. Required to work 6-week summer session when all my colleagues working in other places are off! (for no additional pay)

Re: Spinoff from raises: Pros/Cons of your job
Pros: Seeing a student progress Work day is 7 hours Summers off and vacation and holidays Salary increases each yr (though in NYC it's not much)
The pros are becoming less and less!
Cons: Commute is 50 min When you are sick you have to write up plans for the day for someone else to follow I spend a lot of money every yr. on my students and classroom we are limited on supplies and if we need it we have to buy it. From bandaids to paper , to paying for copies of homework sheets Observations and nit picking I bring a lot of work home. Being forced to use programs to educate that stink! Not enough planning time at work I spend a lot of my prep time finding someone to translate a note, writing notes parents, checking homework stress of a student not progressing and feeling like its your fault Dealing with behaviors and parents denying their child acts that way Data, keeping records, paperwork Expectations of students far above what is appropriate for their age WOrking through lunch at least 50% of the time and the only reason i dont every day is that I make an effort to give myself a break when I can
I'm sure there are lots more

Re: Spinoff from raises: Pros/Cons of your job
Pros: I can wear whatever I want, whenever I want. I don't have to leave my house I get to spend lots of time with my littles - cuddling them, kissing them, playing with them. I get to start dinner whenever I want.. and it is always on the table by 5pm or whenever I need it to be. We get to eat dinner as a family every night. I can eff around on the internet all day if I want. I can fool around with my husband in the middle of the day. I get to meditate and exercise anytime I choose. I can catch up on my leisure and educational reading lists. My house is cleaner because I have time to actually clean. I save a shit ton of money on gas I am happy and more relaxed and have less personal stress then ever before I love what I do
Cons: I am unemployed so I don't really make any money except what UEI gives.

Re: Spinoff from raises: Pros/Cons of your job
Pros: SUPER SUPER flexible - I pretty much come and go as I please 10 minutes from home Great, understanding boss TONS of vacation time Comp time Flex time I get to go home for lunch Expense checks every month for mileage I do a lot of field work so I'm not always in the office Not monotonous at all When I do get through to a client, it's an awesome feeling Great co-workers
Cons: Salary is garbage While it's awesome that I go in later in the day, I also work until 8 or 9pm some nights Upper management / administrators are so completely blindsighted For the most part it's a thankless job Some staff members are totally ignorant to issues within No bonuses Little to no raises Overworked and underpaid Health insurance is terrible and expensive

Re: Spinoff from raises: Pros/Cons of your job
Pros:
Hours - 9:30-5:30 (but I generally get in around 9:45 and stay at least until 5:45 but sometimes later)
Job Security - My dad is the founding partner!
100% paid Healthcare for me and DH
Laid back, casual atmosphere
Co-workers and partners are all super nice and easy to work with/for.
I can surf the net with ease.
Cons:
I work in a satellite office with one of the junior partners so I am the entire support staff for this office.
When the jr. partner is out in court or wherever, I'm all alone and it can get very lonely.
We're together for the most part for 40 hours a week with no one else so we can get on each other's nerves (we get along 90% of the time though).
We all just took a 25% paycut (including partners) that will last until April or May.
If I have to go to the main office, it's about an hour drive, w/o traffic and no public transportation near enough.
There's a lot of pressure b/c I work for a new branch of the office that was started b/c of me so if it fails, I'll feel like it's on me.
This is really not what i wanted to be doing with my life.

Re: Spinoff from raises: Pros/Cons of your job
Pros: great job security low stress (relatively speaking), "easy" work (though high volume at times) good hours, long lunch break can dress casually (pretty much anything besides jeans & sneakers) lots of vacation time pension/benefits/union/decent pay opportunities for advancement never bring work home, stay late, or work through lunch
Cons: annoying commute (not that long, just packed subways get to you after a while) lazy coworkers who try to push their work off onto you, causing tension inept supervisors, management doesn't know what they're doing for the most part

Re: Spinoff from raises: Pros/Cons of your job
Pros:
5 min commute 4 weeks vacation 7 sick days 3 personal days 5 paid floating holidays. I have so much time that I pretty much work 4 day work weeks the whole summer. Very good health benefits ( not free, but very good) Awesome 401k (matches first 3% then matches half for percents 4-6) Really good short term disability - up to 26 weeks at 100% pay ( this will be good when I need to use maternity when the time comes) Cheap long term disability insurance free life insurance Cheap supplemental life insurance for self and spouse Boss is really amazing when things come up Work with really amazing crew (we've become great friends over the years and some have been there 10+ yrs)
Nice to have days off during the week when others are working
Work stays at work and I never have to work more than 40hrs a week
Cons:
Sometimes have to work with rude and annoying customers(for the most part they are nice but I have some wild stories you would swear it's made up)
Sometimes if you're sick you still have to come in since your the manager, if you can't get someone to cover
The constant standing all day is taking a real toll n my back
Working weekends and holidays that everyone else has off.
Totally random schedule so it's hard to make plans.
BLACK FRIDAY and the Christmas season is BAD, it's tough to enjoy the holidays you just kind of get through it. There is no rest and each year is more grueling than the last.

Re: Spinoff from raises: Pros/Cons of your job
Pros Close to home (15 minute drive) Nice building to work in Nice staff overall Never boring or routine Decent benefits, vacation is okay The public using my library is nice for the most part and friendly Enjoy working with children and families, seeing the children grow It's a feel good job overall, you feel as if you have some impact on young lives, however small
Cons Schedule includes some nights and weekends, work is not flexible at all since you need to be here to do a lot of the work No raise this year, unlikely next year It's difficult to take off when sick--staffing is always tight. I'm sick today and working. Staffing is tight so everyone is stretched to their limits and cranky lately. Busy times include summer and school holidays-very hard to take time off then (I'm a parent now, this didn't bother me before) I'd like to drink more water, some days it's impossible to make it to the water fountain enough The public paying our taxes does not realize how hard most people here work and our Board always wants more, explaining that is not possible given the number of people they have chosen to hire is not an option

Re: Spinoff from raises: Pros/Cons of your job
Pros: * My job entails loving kids and trying to make the world a better place. * I love it; it's rewarding and allows me to stick by my principles; * It enables me to be creative and innovative everyday because I have a lot of freedom to run my own show. * It is never boring. I never have the chance to watch the clock. The day flies. * It's collaborative, so working with other people who are equally talented and driven ends up being a winning combination rather than stiff competition. * I get lots of positive feedback from kids, parents, and a supportive building administration to keep up morale. * I don't have to sell anything. * It's stable. * Great benefits * Lots of vacation
Cons: * It's exhausting--physically, mentally, emotionally. * It's highly politicized, and I constantly have politicians and media outlets and morons in the general populace who think they understand what I do and accuse my kind of destroying America. * STRESS. The amount of work I take home 10 months a year is really astounding, and the guilt cloud looms over vacations, weekends, and every night of the week. It cuts into my time to do healthy things for myself like exercise and eat right. I sometimes wonder how I will ever be able to juggle this and small children without sacrificing performance or losing my mind. * My bladder wishes I could just pee when I want to. * Insane parents (not too bad, only 2 or so a year, but the relationship lasts 10 months) * No matter how hard I work, I will get lumped in with do-nothing leeches on the public bankroll, and in general, some people don't seem to think they should have to pay for talent in this field. * I don't get to decide when vacation is, so there are some things (like New Orleans Jazz Fest or Europe in the fall) that I will never get to do until I'm old and retired.

Re: Spinoff from raises: Pros/Cons of your job
Pros:
*I work with my father, so there is no time clock or restraints as far as my comings and goings. If I need to schedule a doctor's appt. I can make it for the middle of the day and never worry about losing time.
*Going along with the previous pro, I decided to go back to school and some of my classes require me to come in late and/or leave early. He has no qualms about this and lets me do whatever works for my schedule.
*I can bring my DD to work if I have to because Grandpa loves visits from his granddaughter. For the first month I came back to work, she was with me to help ease my transition.
*It's pretty relaxed here and I don't have to dress up or anything.
*No internet monitoring, tv is on all day long in the back of our office. We also have a fridge, microwave, and toaster oven and many times it's stocked with stuff
*Short commute
Cons:
*I work with my dad and if there is conflict, it's hard to work through it. It's hard to separate him as an authority figure that I must respect and not talk back vs a boss when he's 100% in the wrong.
*No room for advancement. This is pretty much it, and I can't go up from here.
*When he retires, I can either take over the business or branch out on my own. There is no middle option and it's a little scary!
*Paid cash for the most part and I don't have a pension or health plan.

Re: Spinoff from raises: Pros/Cons of your job
I am almost afraid to write this out because I think it's going to be pretty bad...
PRO's
1. I work in sales and haven't been affected much by the recession due to the fact that I have a very large .com customer.
2. I get commission payments on my whole team's sales.
3. I get profit sharing quarterly if we hit our metrics.
4. My boss cannot do my job nor could he train someone to do my job so I have good job security.
5. We just got AFLAC
6. I enjoy the industry that I work in.
CON's
1. I am related to my boss by marriage and he is a complete and total nutcase and extremely difficult to work with and for! (But he's successful and very intelligent.) I could go on and on but he is predominantly the biggest CON for my job.
2. Only 2 weeks vacation accrued per year, 0.5 sick hours accrued per pay period.
3. My salary is very very low which is scary in sales if commissions aren't good.
4. My commute is 1 hour door to door.
5. We don't have annual reviews/raises/etc.
6. Benefits are horrendous; luckily DH has great benefits at a relatively reasonable price.
