Flooring finished vs unfinished wood

We are installing hardwood floors in 2 bedrooms as well as our staircase. The contractor asked if we want the woodfloors finished or unfinished. I definitely think the stairs should be finished, debating the bedrooms and hallway. Is it going to look bad unfinished? I tried asking and he isn't really giving me an answer. My thought is if unfinished will look fine then we can keep bedrooms unfinished but I don't want to make a mistake.

I've never heard of floors not being finished. Not sure why you would want unfinished floors as they are not protected.

Would you finish them yourselves? Or put carpet over them? Otherwise, I don't know why you wouldn't finish them.

I like the look of unstained or very light stain. Is that what you mean? I would still put polyurethane on it though. I'm wondering if he means prefinished wood - I think it comes so you can install already finished vs installing, sanding, staining, poly.
