Those Who Have Had a Child Need Root Canal, Please Come In
Hi,
We just found out today to our complete surprise after a routine cleaning that my 7-year old DD has three cracked teeth(from decay) and will need Root Canal in them. Of course we're first having a consult and an X-Ray done. These are her baby teeth. As a Mom, my heart is aching for what she's about to have to go through. If any of your children have had root canal please tell me what it's like for a child because knowing the patient I am in a Dentist chair, I am praying that she doesn't follow in my footsteps.
Also, has anyone ever used Dr. Varga and she was highly recommend to us and although she doesn't take mine OR my husbands dental plan we will pay out of pocket for our precious "cargo".
Thank you for ANY insight you may have

I haven't had experiences with cavities filled but from my friends I have heard their baby teeth do not do root canals pull the tooth and put a spacer in

Re: Those Who Have Had a Child Need Root Canal, Please Come In
I'm not familiar with that dentist but it's important going with someone you trust despite insurance if you can afford to pay out of pocket. If you are questioning anything, a simple second opinion can help. Specialists can be very expensive so just map out the prices before you agree. Baby root canals are called a pulpotomy and very simple. If the decay has gone into the nerve, it's important to have this treatment to avoid infection that can potentially damage he forming tooth bud underneath. This practice is more common now than just pulling the tooth because the growing bud utilizes the baby tooth above it. If it is beyond cracked and infected, a dentist will remove the baby tooth and put in a space maintainer to hold space for the permanent tooth that will eventually come out. Some dentists will crown over a pulpotomy while some will not. It really depends on the dentist.

I agree with the above poster, a baby root canal is much simpler and easier then an adult root canal. My DD had one at 4 years old due to decay. The process wasn't any more uncomfortable then a regular cavity, she was fine with some Novocaine. It is important to go with a dentist you trust.

I also agree. DS has had 3 also because of decay.
I had a second opinion and that dentist agreed that it was the way to go. I would not have felt comfortable doing them without getting the second opinion.

Those Who Have Had a Child Need Root Canal, Please Come In
My 4 year old fell this past summer and cracked her front tooth. The nerve was exposed so she needed a root canal. I was so upset and beside myself with worry . I have to tell you though, it was not a big deal to her. It was relatively quick and she never complained of pain. They gave her some Novocain and sweet air.

Please research your alternate options before moving forward. Also research the links between root canals and heart problems...they allow infections to enter the body.

My child needed one, but they decided to pull it and put in a space maintainer. Now her adult tooth is in and all is fine.

Which teeth are they? I'd probably opt to have them pulled since they will fall out soon anyway.

I have no experience with that dentist, but my 2.5 yr old needed a baby root canal on a front tooth that was chipped during a fall. I am terrible at the dentist and so my fears far outweighed the reality of the procedure. My advice to you is to ask a lot of questions. My daughters dentist took the time to fully explain everything to me and it left me feeling so much better about it. I still cried my eyes out in the waiting room, but I trusted DD was in good hands.

Bottom a few in from her center two teeth. Same tooth on both sides, weirdly.

Thank you all for writing. We go tomorrow for a consult and an X-ray and we'll go from there. I'm so nervous but trying to stay calm for my little girl.

My now 6.5 year old had 3 done at age 4 under general anesthesia. It was all due to decay. It was a much simpler process but bc he would not sit for novacaine, we put him out. He has a spacer in place & also had crowns put on

Hi,

No, I did not, which caused me a lot of anxiety leading up to the procedure. Which is why I asked so many questions and then really had to put my trust in the dentist. We went to Dr. Nesnay at That Broadway Smile.

I am so sorry. I just can't contain myself from not asking this . how can you not go inthe room with your two-and-a-half-year-old when she's getting a root canal? was she up for the procedure? put under anesthesia ?

Turns out my DD has to have both baby teeth pulled instead of root canals. We absolutely LOVED the Dentist and trust her. My poor baby has an abcess in one of the teeth being pulled. Praying she'll be ok through this

I was thinking the same thing. No way in hell would I allow this. I'd run as fast as I could out of that office if I was told that I couldn't be with my child.

Speaking from experience (my 8 year old needed a tooth pulled last summer because of a very deep cavity), she will be OK. DD didn't even know what was happening until it was over. The dentist numbed her and it was over in a very few minutes. My DD went in hysterical and came out smiling and loving our new dentist (this was our first visit with her!). The Novocaine wearing off was the hardest part for her.

I was thinking the same thing. No way in hell would I allow this. I'd run as fast as I could out of that office if I was told that I couldn't be with my child.
I get it, I asked myself and the dentist the same thing. The dentist advised that it would be her and 2 assistants in the room. 1 to assist the dentist, 1 to attend to DD. Believe me, I came on here and on Google and read tons of stories where ppl insist on going in the room and I thought I would too. But then I had to think to myself, if DD were in the hospital for a procedure would I insist on being in the operating room? No, I would have to trust the doctors. We chose a highly recommended dentist for a reason.
Here are a few reasons why we didn't go in with her: 1 - there's not enough space for 5 ppl in the room. 2 - my fear and anxiety would be transferred to DD making her more anxious and afraid. 3 - children are often easier to work on when a parent is not in the room.
I wasn't "happy" about not being in the room with her, but I understood. During the procedure several ppl from the office came out to us to let us know how she was doing and how much time was left. DD was not sedated, they used novocain and sweet air. When the nurse carried her out she was not crying and she was not traumatized. All she talks about since the procedure is the toys she got from the dentist and the ice cream she ate afterwards.
