Syosset/Woodbury v. Albertson, East Williston, etc.
Hi! I'm new here - a soon to be Long Island-er again but not quite yet. I was born and raised in LI but spent the last 10+ years in NYC. My husband and I are currently looking to buy a house in the Syosset/Woodbury area OR in any of towns associated with the Wheatley School District. We understand that the Syosset School District and Wheatley School District are different in size, but both have good reputations. Just looking for opinions as to other pros and cons about each of the locations. My husband and I are both attorneys with NYC based offices. However, I WFH mostly and hubby has an office in NYC and LI. That said, train location is a factor to consider in our decision but not at the top of the list. We have one DD who is 19 months. Thanks in advance!

Syosset/Woodbury v. Wheatley
are you talking about Wheatley Heights? If so there isn't a district for Wheatly Heights. Its either Wyandanch , Deer Park. These are VERY different than the Syosset schools and the towns are also very different.

Re: Syosset/Woodbury v. Wheatley
I think PP is talking about the East Williston School District (which includes the Wheatley School) in the East Williston/Old Westbury area.

No - I should have been more clear. The towns we are looking at surrounding the Wheatley School district would be Albertson, East Williston, etc.

I've never heard of a Wheatley School District. There is, however, a Wheatley School - it is a public high school in Old Westbury. I believe it is part of the East Williston school district.

Northside/Wheatley schools have an excellent reputation. A lot smaller than Syosset. I actually looked in this area but everything i liked was out of our budget. They say the high school is like a private school, which is something that i liked. My son goes to nursery school in Roslyn but many of his classmates have older siblings in the East Williston district. What i personally like about that area is the location. My dry cleaners and favorite kid shop to buy clothes is located in Albertson so im around that area frequently. I personally live off of Shelter Rock and the proximity to the city is a dream.

So if train times are a factor you should know that all of the trains on the East Williston/Albertson line have to transfer at Jamaica. The trains are also not as frequent. The Syosset train has express trains and run much more frequently.
The school districts are also much different in size. I think East Williston probably has half as many students as Syosset.
My DH and I are in a very similar situation. We are moving to LI from Brooklyn and will both be commuting to NYC. We decided to move to Greenlawn in the Harborfields SD and while driving distance it is clearly a lot further than Albertson/East Williston, being on the Huntington train line is actually better for commuting purposes.
I did a ton of research into pretty much every town on LI, so if you have any questions you can FM me :)

I live just over the line in Williston Park and absolutely love it! There's a real community feel and love the mom and pop shops on Hillside.
The trains on the Oyster Bay line do run more infrequently than others, but rush hour is never a problem. There's also a bus line that runs down to the Mineola train station. ETA - I also work in NYC so this was important to me as well.
