Done with booster seat
How old was your child when they were completely done with a booster seat and just used the seat belt?

Re: Done with booster seat
DS was about 9. DD is 10, and she uses it in the car and the van, but not my truck. It's just the way the belts lie across her chest. She's on the smaller side, which is why she still needs it sometimes.

Last year when she turned 8. She has always been quite tall for her age.

Re: Done with booster seat
My son will be nine in a few weeks, and even though he is in the 95% for height, he is still in the booster. He is over 80 lbs, but he is 4 feet eight and a half inches. I think the minimum is four foot nine inches, so until he reaches that limit he will still be in the car seat. All of his friends got rid of their car seats at eight years old, but I would rather keep him in it until he is the right size. He will likely stop using it at nine.

Is there an age cap on boosters? I laugh every time I see the 4'9 requirement because I'm 4'11 now! I would've needed a booster until I was 14... so now I wonder how long my daughters will have to be in them.

Done with booster seat
Mine just turned 9 and is still in one. I think she weighs 63lbs? I think there are a lot of factors that play into whether they should go without one. Waist to shoulder height, where the seatbelt falls on them (all cars are different), etc.

the law says age eight, but then it lists 80 lbs or 4' 9". It also has to do with where the lap belt rest on the hips and the torso height. My son has long legs, but a shorter torso, so for him you can see that he is almost ready to move out of the car seat, but not yet. Some of his friends have longer torsos, but are shorter than my son. They don't need the booster because the lap belt rests appropriately on their body. The thing I find most interesting is that a nine year old would have to be in the 96% to reach 57 inches. So the age does not really meet the averages for kids.

Done with booster seat
It is not safe for a child to be out if a booster before they can pass the "5 step test" which is typically between 10 and 12 years old. Typically their hips and other bones can not stand the pressure from the force of a crash before then.
HERE is a good article about it
And HERE is a good article about boosters for big kids.
And as far as smaller adults, one you start puberty, your bones become denser and are able to withstand larger forces in the event of a crash.

The problem with NY law (and other states as well ) was that at the time they were written and enacted, they were written to the maximum limits of the seats that were available on the market at that time. They also didn't have the same research and testing that goes into passenger safety as they do today.

Me too. I started high school at 79 pounds and 4 foot 9. My little guy is 7 and 45 pounds. But, he is so so skinny.
When can they lose the high back?

Done with booster seat
You can use a booster with no back when they can sit properly without it (no leaning to the side, even while sleeping, no sitting crooked, etc) and as long as the seatbelt fits correctly (low across the hips, not on the belly, and the shoulder belt lays on their collarbone between their neck and shoulder (not too close to one side or the other) Some no back boosters come with a guide that assists in shoulder belt fit. (It's a black strap with red plastic piece that attaches to the seat)

8 for my oldest. 7 for my second but he is huge. The booster became very uncomfortable for him and it was clear he didn't need it anymore.

I think DD will have to be in one until she hits the puberty thing mentioned above!
It's crazy how small she is. I bought her a size S (6/6X)outfit for school today from target... it's HANGING off her. She's almost 6 years old!

My DD2 is 3.5 years old. She's only 26 pounds!! She wears a 3T shirt but 2T shorts for the most part. Lol. I JUST turned her foward facing last week since is coming soon and I can't have to rear facing seats fit in my truck.
DD1 (who is 17 years old) was almost 10 before she came out of a booster. And if I knew then what I know now, she would have been in it a bit longer.

Both my boys were 8/8.5. My son now is 8.5 and is almost 80 lbs (78/79lbs). He isn't 4'9" but getting close (about 4 ft 7in or so). His head was almost hitting the roof of my car when he was in the booster.

Glad I'm not alone. I am 5 9 so I figured I'd have a tall kid. Nope. She is a peanut! But I'm with you. I will keep her in boosters as long as humanly possible. She's still in her 5 pt harness and I dont' see even converting it to a high back booster anytime soon at all!

Re: Done with booster seat
Honestly I don't see how so many 8-9 year olds are out of their seats. I think my daughter is about average height (people say she looks tall). She is 65 lbs and 54 inches (4'6") she has very tall friends who are only 57 inches now. But only one other friend uses a booster and she is much smaller than my daughter. They make fun of her for her seat and I hate driving them because they clearly do not have the belt fitting correctly. Parents say boosters are for babies and they ditched theirs 1-2 years ago. My daughter will be 9 next month. I find how the belt fits though depends on the car, some seats are higher than others.

Re: Done with booster seat
I think I already posted but somone in a local parent group posed this on Facebook- Safercar.gov
There is a tool you can use and according to it, I could/should have my 9 year old (70 pounds, 4'8.5") in a highback booster which I do not think she would fit in. I do find that a seatbelt fits her the way it's supposed to. I wish it wasn't so confusing- according to this, my mother in law needs to be in a booster seat.

Re: Done with booster seat
We took my son out when he was about 8.5 years old - he was 83 pounds and 4'9" tall and sitting in it was just awkward for him. The regular seat belt seemed to fit him fine. He was actually the last of his friends to still be in a booster - parents thought I was crazy.

Your car - your rules. That's how I see it. My 8-9 year olds are both bigger than most of their friends and probably one of the lasts to come out of a booster. Many of their much smaller friends were out before 8 - even in front seat and some aren't much taller than my 5 year old daughter!!! Law is 8 years old - if they are in my car - they had to wear one or I won't take them. I many have heard moans but kids still did it. Recently my son, who is almost 9 and out of a booster (see above he is 80lbs and about 4'7" and doesn't fit well in a booster), was picked up by a taller friend (who is almost 9.5) to go to a game. The taller friend is in a booster. I gave that dad a booster for my son even though he doesn't use it in my car. I had no issues and my son did it willingly. That's how it should be.

Yup. I make them ride in it. But after five mins fight with the kid who told her mom who then told me my kid isn't a baby and the bot fits correctly. They aren't safe in the seat and shouldn't be in it. Hence the reason I almost always refuse to drive my 3rd graders friends. Has happened with two different kids.
