Moving to NC
So after much discussion, negotiation and tears on my part we have decided to move to NC in 3 years. Part of my negotiation was all debt has to be paid off and I want a large sum in the bank before selling our house and moving OOS. I also want my dream house and every 3rd Christmas will be in NY. I work from home so my salary will not change and dh's will only decrease by about 10%
This has been discussed time and time again and dh has finally convinced me.
So if anyone knows the Raleigh area please weigh in. Good school districts is my #1 priority. Apex is on our list and my cousin is sending me a list of all areas with good rated schools. We are also going to head down there at least for a long weekend once a year to get a feel of the area. I have family down there so we won't be alone and won't have to pay for hotels.

I lived in Durham and my husband worked in Chapel Hill. We love the area, but don't know much about Raleigh other than the few things we visited. We moved to LI 2 years ago and I miss being in the Triangle.
One thing to ask your family about is redistricting - they seem to do it a lot in Raleigh and Cary b/c it's used as a political pawn. Make sure that you find a stable school district.

Thanks. We have family down there so heading down in a couple of weeks to start getting a feel for Apex, Cary, Wake and Johnston.

DH and I are moving down there in the next 1-2 years. We picked the Charlotte area though. The schools down there are amazing. We liked Matthews and Waxhaw the best, among some others. Its such a different lifestyle and provides for so much more opportunity. Good luck to you and your DH!

Thank you. You too. We were all set on Charlotte but for.my dh Raleigh is better career wise. I love Charlotte and will definitely be there a lot especially since I have friends there.

Thank you. You too. We were all set on Charlotte but for.my dh Raleigh is better career wise. I love Charlotte and will definitely be there a lot especially since I have friends there.
It was such a nice area. We're going to explore Raleigh too, but I'm pretty set on Charlotte. Mainly because, like you said, we have some familiar faces there to make the transition easier. Plus its so close to SC and it would make it more beneficial for our parents as well when they make the move down.

My SIL moved to Wake Forest about 10 years ago and loves it, and 2 of my friends moved to NC as well and love it. My friend just moved to Apex has all good things to say about it, and my other friend moved to Raleigh and loves it too. My friend in Raleigh has her kids in the schools there and there are no complaints, I think it has become such a popular place to live they have had to build more schools. Schools here are so confusing! There aren't school "districts" but you are zoned for a traditional calender school and a year round option school. You can go to any public school in the county but if you aren't zoned you won't get busing. There are also magnet, charter and private school options. There is so much growth that it's changing all the time. Our zoned schools changed because a new school was just built. There is a major school building and renovation project going on for the next 10 years.
I think there are areas when schools rate better, but I wouldn't necessarily go just by that. I live in Raleigh on the border of a town called Knightdale. I thought Knightdale would be awful and ghetto based on schools but it's actually a really nice up and coming town. There's a lot of diversity which I like and the reason schools don't rate well is the high ESL student population. The school I want to send my daughter too rates 5/10 on greatschools.org but it's a great school, great teachers etc... (We're opening a business there and I probably would have bought in knightdale! We are opening a Huntington Learning Center in Knightdale and learned a lot from the principles of the local schools.)
Cary is probably where most Long Islanders move... if that interests you.
Wake forest is another high LI area and is really nice but growing by leaps and bounds. Rolesville is their neighbor town. Either can be suburban to more rural.
Raleigh has really great neighborhoods or... scary neighborhoods.
I would honestly suggest renting first. You'll meet and talk to people and learn different areas. I probably would have bought in Knightdale, Wake Forest or slightly more rural. I'm lucky I have awesome neighbors but I'd like more land and privacy... maybe one day. I live in a preplanned development which is starting to look squishy but I love my lot (adjacent to a pond) and my house and although public we have a community pool that the HOA pays for.
Also, wherever your child goes you can go through Project Enlightenment if you need extra services. It's available for all Wake County Residents. My daughter is 3.5 and is getting screened for speech therapy. If she qualifies (i'm sure she will) we will get speech therapy for free and possibly free pre-K.
If you have little little ones, the birthday cut off for kindergarten is 8/31 so my LO will start kindergarten a whole year later than we thought. Which is actually really a good thing.

When we moved to Durham in 2008, I was surprised at how expensive houses were there and Chapel Hill. It's even more expensive than some parts of Atlanta suburbs!

We moved down to Holly Springs 4 years ago and it was the best decision ever. We actually just built a home on the border of HS and Fuquay Varina, but all Holly Springs schools. It's such a family oriented area, and everyone is so nice. I will say though, the town in growing very fast, almost too fast. When we moved down here years ago I never encountered traffic, now I am in traffic all the time (although nothing compares to NY traffic). The market down here is hot. We made a nice profit on our home in just 3.5 years.
All the HS school are great.
Apex is nice, Cary is nice, Morrisville is nice, and Fuquay Varina i becoming the new Holly Spings, and is nice as well (not all, but a good majority). I have a couple of friends who live in Raleigh by NC state and they love it.
Our area is great, we are 20 minutes from downtown Raleigh and about 40 minutes from Durham and Chapel Hill. Chapel Hill and Carrboro are nice as well but expensive. A lot of Durhmam is really nice too.
There is sooooooo much to do in the area, that we never get bored.

Depends on what you are looking for and budget. A lot of the new builds have smaller lots, at least in HS, which I didn't mind. West Cary has tons of new developments with bigger lots, although my friend wanted a flat 1/2 acre plot , in a pool community and supposedly had a hard time finding that . She ended up spending about 900k to get what she wanted ( her wants list was long though). You can get a 2000 sq ft new build on .25 acre plot in300's here in HS. Obviously, the bigger you go and more higher end finishes you choose, will cost you more.
Also depends on builder. Some builders include a ton in their price, and others nickle and dime youFor everything. But, I definitely think it's at least worth looking into.
I think it is a great idea for you to visit 1x a season. In the winter, If it snows more than an inch, everything literally closes down.

We are also looking to move to the Raleigh area! We are actually going this weekend to visit and hope to move by spring 2017! The school situation does make me nervous though. We plan to rent first then hope to buy a home zoned for the same school we start our son at! I would hate for him to have to change schools once we're down there. This is the biggest thing that stresses me out about moving. It seems like the school zoning changes frequently because there is so much growth in the area

It's not just growth that prompts the changes - it's used as a political pawn quite often b/c it's racially charged.

Well we won't be lonely in Raleigh. This was my biggest concern but my aunt and uncle, dh's bf and very close family friends are all moving to NC in the next 3 to 5 years as well. And I just found out another couple we have known off and on for years lives down there as well.
