Good Sam Vs. Stonybrook

I am considering switching doctors before I become pregnant. My current Dr delivers at Good Sam only, I love her and have been going to her for years. I am considering switching to a doctor a few friends go to that delivers at Stony Brook. I would prefer to do it before I was pregnant though to make things a little easier when it does happen.

ETA:I am torn on hospitals and was looking for some input/experiences with each, and advice!

Thanks!!

I have never been to good Sam other than when my SIL delivered my nephew. It seemed pretty dumpy and she had to share a room. That was something I did not want. Stonybrook is more modern, the rooms are private and huge.

That being said, you also need to love your doctor.

I would pick a DR that delivers close to home - for me, Stony Brook was within a relatively close driving distance and while there was another hopsital a few minutes closer I preferred SB. No idea about Good Sam though.

I switched doctors specifically to deliver at SB with my first after hearing bad things about Good Sam and great about Stony. (Good Sam is about 7 minutes from me. SB is 35) Very happy with my decision. SB was excellent, doctors and nurses were amazing and they actually have decent food haha I don't have a way to compare, but I'm very happy with SB and my doctors.

Good Sam now has gorgeous new private rooms on a separate floor. They're first come first serve and you pay $250 a night if I remember correctly.

I have delivered twice at Good Sam and had great experiences both times. I'll be there for round 3 in September. The new unit is super nice and clean. It's like a hotel room. You do have to pay for it but it's worth every cent.

Ive been to SB to visit friends and the accommodations seemed nice.

there's about a three mile difference between the two and my house, and time wise - its about a 5-10 minute difference. That's another reason i am torn, because there's really no difference in distance either. I felt like SB was so much further, but its really not haha

Personally I would pick the Dr and deal with where they deliver. My Dr is amazing and while I delivered my DS at Good Sam and it was fine.....not great not horrible, I would go wherever my Dr told me too because he is that amazing. Even the street corner!!!

I agree with this. The OB is the most important aspect of the delivery process and having confidence in him/her if you have any complications.

True, but I would also look into how likely you are that your doctor will actually do the delivery. I love my practice but both times I delivered it was a Sunday night and I had covering doctors. I was fine with it bc I'd been informed in advance and I'd heard all good things about the covering practices. I delivered at sb and would never consider going elsewhere after unexpected complications landing dd2 in the nicu. I have no doubt that had she not had the best possible care she may not be here or healthy today.

Good Sam Vs. Stonybrook

For my first I had a choice between Good Sam and Southside and a majority of my friends told me Southside was nicer so I went with it so can't really compare .. but I just delivered my 2nd at Stonybrook and omg it was a thousand times nicer. Stonybrooks labor/delivery room was like a hotel. Baby never left my side from the second she was born until I was discharged, every test and the bath etc were all done in my room. I had no real complaints about my first delivery but I definitely wouldn't go anywhere but stonybrook after my experience there

Re: Good Sam Vs. Stonybrook

I delivered both my girls at Good Sam -- I LOVE my dr. so I didnt mind. I felt good sam was ok -- LOVED my labor and delivery nurses both times. After care was fine. Its not the most glamorous of hospitals, sharing a room isnt my favorite.. but my care was great.. t hey have a good NICU if needed. For the 2 days I had to be there, it was fine. I dont need to be in a hotel room for the short time im there. Its more important to me to love my Dr.
