Kid asking santa for some thing doesn't exists
He wants a powerwheel ghostbuster car that he can drive.
Our first mistake ( my mother in law) was getting him a power wheel "from Santa" last year and then a motorcycle. I know other kids don't get big items from Santa and believe santa should bring reasonable toys while big items from family. But how do I go backwards now. I want to fix this before he gets to kindergarten.
I tried saying that he can't always get the big presents, there has to be enough for other kids too. I said maybe the elves can make his powerwheel look like a Ghostbuster car.
He doesn't believe me and has his heart set that santa can do anything. I don't want to take the magic out of Santa.
Please don't judge. We try not to spoil them rest of year and life has been hard going through divorce, don't want him sad on Christmas but 1- santa can't bring big items every year and 2- even if we wanted to 'from grandma' they don't even make a Ghostbuster power wheel.
What have you done when your kid ask santa for something that can't be?

Re: Kid asking santa for some thing doesn't exists
In our house Santa does bring big gifts so in terms of that there's no right or wrong, just what works for your family.
I let my kids ask Santa for anything and everything that they want. But I also make them aware that asking doesn't mean that you wil get (Although my DS2 is too young to understand this yet).
As for him asking for something that doesn't exist, there's nothing you can do except say that you've never ever seen that. And find ways to let him know that Santa tries but you can't guarantee what you will get. Plus, if he has a powerwheel, he doesn't need another so say that Santa doesn't bring repeat gifts, lol.
I save every toy catalogue that comes to our house and have them look at those so that they get ideas. Maybe have him look at some and he'll pick something else he really wants.

Re: Kid asking santa for some thing doesn't exists
We have also done big gifts from Santa and some years my kids have been disappointed. It's life. You can only do your best and that's all there is.
My children are older and my youngest, at 9 is on the verge of realizing the truth. She decided to ask the tooth fairy for real pixie dust... Apparently a friend got it. So I wrote her a letter explaining that I , the tooth fairy, was not allowed to give out the real thing. She was still disappointed but it was that or squash her dreams. Lol.

Re: Kid asking santa for some thing doesn't exists
I've had the kids ask for something way too $$ or something that I couldn't get and I just said "find something else to put on the list". I've been really open about the fact that Santa can't bring crazy big presents all the time. They end up having a great Christmas no matter what. We do what we can and kids just can't always get what they want. Its a fact of life and I think we worry too much that they'll be disappointed. But my kids have always been ecstatic on Christmas, and the fact they have a lot of family that spoils them helps lol. If I were in your position I'd say I wrote Santa an email. one of the helper Elves responded that they do not make that toy. Show him other things ghostbuster related that might be an option. Don't feel bad for one minute, he's lucky to have such a caring mom!

Kid asking santa for some thing doesn't exists
Santa always bring the big and best toys. We don't buy her toys really besides bday and Christmas. I just keep telling her she can ask but Santa can't bring every toy on everyone's list. She is only 3 but this is what my parents told me.

Re: Kid asking santa for some thing doesn't exists
I have never had that problem. But I would remind him that while Santa is magic, his magic can only go so far and that he and his elves can only do so much because there are so many kids out there. I always have the "you know there are so many kids out there who don't get as many nice things as you" card to play- I don't know how old your child is so that may not be age appropriate.
On a slightly unrelated note I am thinking this is the last year of Santa and I am so relieved. DD is 9 and it is getting exhausting trying to keep up the charade. She is on to us.

One of my twins is 5 and insists Santa is going to bring him a huge ball pit (like in Bounce U or one of those places). He really wants it. Even though we tell him it won't fit in our house, he insists it will and Santa can do it. Ugh!
He already has one of those small ball pits so it's not like we could even get him that. We've just been saying Santa can only do so much.
Maybe you can take him to see Santa and have Santa explain they are working on it or something and may not have it ready till next year or something like that! GL!

Just thinking in terms of the GB power wheel not existing, can you DIY it? Meaning, add some vinyl stickers in a Ghostbusters theme to a simple car.

I have no long term solution to your problem.
Does it have to be a powerwheels?

As for him asking for something that doesn't exist, there's nothing you can do except say that you've never ever seen that. I agree - Santa does do big gifts in our house, too. My DH and I usually will do one or two gifts to our DS (who's almost 8) from us, but they will be things that are more experience-oriented (sports or show tix) or practical (new roller blades). We try to do the "wow factor" toys/gifts from Santa. (When he was little, it was things like a motorized car or his Thomas Train table, and now this year, a video game system.) I try do quality over quantity, but I will fill in with some smaller things (board games, sports equipment, crafts) so there are more than a couple of items under the tree.
So as far as the cost/size of the gifts from Santa, that's up to you and there should be no judgment.
As far as wanting impractical things or things that don't exist -- I've tried to teach my DS early on that Santa doesn't strictly adhere to your wish-list. It's a guide, but he also likes to bring some surprises that you may not have thought you wanted or known you wanted, but he knows you will like and enjoy. So it's Santa who decides, ultimately, what gifts to bring to each child based on their likes, interests, etc. I tell my DS that's how it worked when I was little, too (which is true).
I think that preserves the "magic" in that there are extra surprises and Santa is not just some order-taker. (I never encourage my son to write out a list; I just ask him in general, "what are some things you hope Santa may bring?") But gives me latitude to buy things that I want him to have and I know he will be happy with versus a "real washing machine" (which was an odd request that my DS made when he was 3). I know that we sometimes see Santa (he comes to my office and on a firetruck to my neighborhood) relatively late in the game and sometimes my DS will add on some request I've never heard of. Some of the things my DS has really loved the most from Santa and the most memorable items have been things he wouldn't have known to ask for but I knew were perfect for him.
I feel like kids are inevitably happy with what they get on Christmas morning, and if they do mention something that isn't there, there's always next year. But if your son is obsessing on one main thing that you know he's not getting, definitely try to prepare him by emphasizing that Santa may decide to bring other fun things instead.

I never got everything on my Christmas list. I got a few things every year. i think you are on the right track by telling him he can't always get big gifts and that he was so lucky to get some big gifts last year. He's young so he's going to be upset when he doesn't get it, but it's a good lesson on managing expectations.

This! Santa has brought our boys wow gifts that they haven't asked for (nor that they knew existed) but that I really wanted them to have and it has definitely added to the magic of Christmas.

Re: Kid asking santa for some thing doesn't exists
When I was little I remember writing Santa a detailed letter on how I wanted dance costumes.... I liked sequins sparkle glitter and fringeLol.
I mailed it out and never got any costumes. I now think about that letter and who ever got it must have had a really good laugh.
He might even so occupied with other things that he will forget about it. Good luck.

I would get a giftcard or make coupons to Bounce U and attach it to some ball pit balls. Then make a note from santa saying since i couldnt fit a bounce house in ur house you can can go this many times to Bounce U etc..

This is a great idea!
OP, I agree with a few of the above posters, I would get a gray Power Wheels and go on Etsy and get some stickers. Amazon has some too. I agree with the, "Sometimes Santa can't bring everything," approach, but if he's got his heart set on it I think this is the way to go.

Re: Kid asking santa for some thing doesn't exists
In our house Santa brings ALL gifts. My DH and I give a few very small gifts (IE: a book and pjs) on Xmas eve. Everything else is from Santa.
That being said... I try to improvise when it comes to gifts. In this situation if you're willing to get the Power Wheels I would try to find a huge Ghost Busters sticker and put in on a black or red Power Wheels.

Good luck!

They definitely have basic colored Power Wheels. I would decal the hell out of it and get a ton of Ghostbuster gear to go with it. Like the Ghostbuster costume, power pack thing. Even the movie Ghostbusters lol I am all about making a huge memory on Christmas morning and if he has his heart set on it Is be building the darn thing. Then again I'm a sucker lol

You could strip his Powerwheels of all its decals, spray it with some Krylon and make it into a Ghostbuster theme. I'm sure you could find decals on ebay.
When my kid was 6, the only thing on his list was a real live penguin. Yeah, not happening kid, Santa can't always deliver.

Re: Kid asking santa for some thing doesn't exists
I feel you. My daughter wants: a real fairy; a real mermaid, her room filled with candy; and a huge playground with playhouse and tunnel slide (we already have a playground) Oh and one of those egg toys that are sold out everywhere So she is out of luck. I told her Santa doesn't always get you exactly what you asked for , and often he'll get you something amazing you didn't even ask for! Also the elfs can only do so much!
Hopefully on Christmas morning the other presents will make her happy and she won't focus on what she didn't get. I think it is healthy for them not to get everything they ask for. Plus i am a big fan of presents they didn't ask for thrown in too.
