Candles in the Windows at Christmas?
Didn't know if it meant something so looked it up and found its an Irish tradition. I really like the look of it and want to do it at Christmas using battery operated LED candles but I am not Irish. Would it be okay for non Irish people to do this at Christmas? If any of you do this, do you have the suction ones or the ones you place on the windowsill and where did you buy them? Thanks!

I don't think it matters if you're Irish. I've never heard that BTW. Anyhoo, they sell battery ones. You can just leave them on the window sill if you have the room.

My mom does it & she's Italian LOL. She has battery ones from Frontgate & they also have a timer to go on & off. They flicker too like real candles :)

Michaels sells cheap ones. That's funny I grew up doing it, and still do (I am Irish.) My husband had never heard of it. Everyone I knew did it so I assumed maybe it was more regional (Im from MD, he's from NY,) but maybe it was because of the Irish heritage.

I got mine from plow and hearth. They go on for 8 hours and shut off. Mine are up all year. I always thought of it as New England thing.

To me, they are just a holiday thing. I'm 100% Italian.............I put candles in my window. It just looks so pretty!!
I use suction cups to hold them on the window. You can get both the suction cups and candles at Michael's, Target, BJ's.............pretty much anywhere that sells Xmas decorations.

I like the look of it, so some years I do it (I like to switch up my decorations) and I'm not Irish at all. I bought a 3 pack of battery operated candles at BJ's a few years ago.

Yeah, anyone can do it. I doubt every other house that does it in my very diverse Queens neighborhood is Irish!

You've been here long enough to know that ANYTHING will offend someone....
Modern Christmas traditions are so intertwined from so many different cultures that there really aren't any items that are just for one group. The majority of the symbols and traditions of Christmas have little to nothing to do with Jesus and Christianity even. (Not a whole lot of pine trees and yule logs in Israel.... )
I've seen the candles on some windows. I don't know those people, so I don't know their culture, but I agree that it looks very pretty. I especially like them in Colonial style houses for some reason.

I agree, they look SO pretty in colonial homes. When we were in Williamsburg, VA we noticed that almost EVERY house has candles in the windows, even the store fronts............year round!! It's so nice!!

I'm Irish, but I had no idea it's an Irish thing. I bought mine from Michaels.
