Did you have to go to an MFM for over 35?

I'm 36 and 9.5 w pregnant with my 3rd. My doctor hasn't mentioned anything about an MFM, but two of my other friends had to go because of their age. It was their first child and over 35, so maybe that's why? Just curious what the norm is.

Not at all, either time. Only if a situation arises would you need to go.

I had my first at 38 going on 39. I did not need to go, it was never brought up.

Not for age alone. If there are other underlying issues, you would be referred to an MFM.

Thanks! My one friend definitely had underlying issues, too (recent cancer survivor), but my other friend did not. Maybe some docs are just really conservative.

Re: Did you have to go to an MFM for over 35?

I saw MFM doctors last time because they were monitoring the growth and later monitoring my glucose intolerance. I remember one of them commenting that they would see me with my next pregnancy because I'd be AMA then. I don't know if the comment was just because of my age or because they assumed I'd probably have glucose issues again as I got older, but between my age, previous ectopic and now SCH, I wouldn't be surprised if I eventually end up there. I don't think you're automatically high risk though just because of age.

No, not at all. Not unless you have an underlying condition.

I am but not because of my age, even tho I am over 35. I had not heard of that as a reason to need an MFM.

I did not. That was until I had complications. I was 38. My sister was 41 and didn't. Age alone is not a automatic. You would need to have other risk factors.

I didn't. I had my second son when I was 36.5. They said they would send me only if something looked questionable.

Re: Did you have to go to an MFM for over 35?

I found out today that I will be going to MFM for 2 appointments. It's solely due to my age. If I was under 35, I'd get the NT scan, which would be through my OB. Instead, I'm getting one of the newer screening tests and ultrasound through MFM and then will go back there for the Level 2.
