How does an expediter make money?

We need to get some permits for work that we had done and friends of ours suggested contacting an expeditor to help. Do we pay the expeditor a fee? They didn't think so but how does the expeditor make money?

Yes the expeditor gets a large fee. You pay all permit costs plus there fee which is usually a few hundred dollars.
Not sure why you need permits but if you aren't on a time schedule do it yourself. You can go to the town and get the applications and have the licensed contractor fill out the info.

Thanks, I must have misunderstood. Maybe just the initial consult for him to come is what's free, but I figured they have to be paid by someone and it's not going to be the town!

Yes, they charge a fee.

Depending on what it is, it can be well worth it to utilize an expediter. Something involving a variance, for example. Or if you aren't sure what else might crop up as needing C/Os in the house (sometimes people start the process with the town for one thing, and then it opens a can of worms with other things you didn't even know about), you may want to consult with an expediter.

The one I recommend doesn't charge anything upfront -- he will come look at the house and do his initial consultation, telling you what needs to be done and the cost estimate to do it. Sometimes it's not that easy to navigate through the process with the town.

I always recommend that my sellers use an expediter so you know what you are dealing with -- in total -- upfront. Also, they know people at the town and are well-versed in the process, so it will go faster and smoother than if you go it alone. It can be an aggravating process, even WITH an expediter.

Money well spent, imo. But of course, you want a good, experienced, effective expediter.
