Warning for Peanut Allergy Kids...Very Scary Incident.
Took my kids to White Post farms in Melville yesterday. We all walk in to the primate enclosure area with my 17 month old who is Ana to Peanut. We get past the first pane of glass when I step on something crunchy. I look down and there are peanuts all over the floor and up ahead I see a gumball machine type thing that dispenses loose peanuts for people to feed the monkeys.(This is all happened in a matter of 30 seconds) I yanked my son out and began wiping him down as the hives started popping up on his face. I can not understand why they need a peanut dispenser this day and age when the allergy to nuts is so prevalent but they should at least have a sign up. I asked the manager on my way out if they planned on putting a sign up and he told me the put one up everyday and kids rip it down. I totally understand as an allergy parent its my responsibility to watch for potential danger but never would I think a peanut dispenser for monkeys behind glass at children's petting zoo. Just a word of warning to other parents for their kids if they are visiting there.

Ugh. Guess we won't be going there any time soon. Thanks for the heads up.
Same issue with Texas Roadhouse. I don't understand why peanuts need to be strewn around anywhere in this day and age.

Wow - we used to go there a lot and I've never seen them with peanuts for the monkeys. That's really disappointing! I was already nervous about the stuff on the stick for the birds (mystery ingredients), so it's a bummer that they aren't thinking about common food allergies in a place for kids.

White Post Farms is disgusting in so many ways.
They treat the animals poorly, rip off everyone that walks in the gate, and then have the audacity to act so nonchalant about your son almost going into shock??? Please. If kids keep ripping down the sign how about you cough up $50 and put up a permanent sign.

I've never been and no one in my family is allergic to peanuts. However, for a place with so many little kids... there should be a sign. and if they have one that keeps getting ripped down, they should seriously consider a permanent sign. How hard is it to get a metal sign that can be bolted into a wood post or something... I mean really... c'mon

It's true that there had been signs up, at least on Sunday. There were paper signs that said it was not a Peanut free zone. I was surprised too that they feed peanuts. If they HAVE to have nuts, maybe they should have staff at the exhibit entry points warning everyone until they get permanent signs.

Ugh! I agree about the permanent sign. Totally unacceptable.
For the other poster who mentioned Texas Roadhouse - they have signs before you even go inside. It's their prerogative to serve the nuts, but they go out of their way to let patrons know. That doesn't bother me. We just eat elsewhere.

Honestly, for the prices that place charges, they can handle the expense of a permanent sign. Not for nothing, its a children's place. How about not being so nonchalant about their safety.

MrsD121011 - I was wondering, were the plastic flaps at the entry and exit meant to contain the peanut? Does that work, or could your child react just walking past the area? What if a another child carried a handful out if the exhibit?

If the shells end up on the ground then people will pick bits of it up in their shoes. Additionally, people that don't deal with food allergies don't think about how it affects those that do and will likely carry them around the rest of the farm if they didn't feed all to the monkeys. I see that goat food all over the place so I assume peanut shells could be, too.

That's what I was thinking, but I didn't know if it has to be in a confined space to affect someone or if the whole farm is dangerous for them now.

Yes, I'm aware of the signs. I just don't see what the point of the peanuts is. Why alienate a whole group of people to have stupid peanuts at the tables. Have popcorn or pretzels, or nothing.
My husband and I like TR a lot, but can't ever go there as a family. It just sucks.

Well it does get challenging because everyone can be Ana to something. Eggs, milk, shellfish, nuts etc. We don't go to a restaurant that puts popcorn out because my daughter was ana to milk products and the popcorn was buttered (not oil based) It sometimes gets tough for restaurants to keep everyone safe so the best they can do is raise awareness to keep their patrons safe. The zoo should definitely have a sign at the entrance.

Thanks so much for the heads up! I went there a few years ago with my non allergic child for a bday party and was not to thrilled with the conditions in which the animals were kept so I didn't plan on going back but it's great to know about the peanuts!

Like others have said, add it to the list of reasons not to go there.
The way they treat some of those animals is just disgusting.

It can definitely cause the entire location to be a hazard because of cross contamination. If a kid has peanut on his shoe and steps on the slide then my son goes down and it gets on his hands, we have an issue.

I sent them a long message on FB and I know they have read I, but no response. I have also posted a review on their page also no response. We will never go back and that's is that. I just pray that they ordered a sign and that there are no issues for another kid.
