Brookhaven apartment permits
I was under the understanding that a basement apartment could not be made legal in the town of Brookhaven but I've seen 2 listings on Mlsli today that list a house with basement apt as a possible mother daughter with proper permits....anyone have any knowledge on this?? Thanks!

Re: Brookhaven apartment permits
possible mother daughter = not legal apartment
i think you can get a legal apt as long as there are the right windows & # exits though-- a house i was in contract that fell thru had said they had had permits but they let them lapse. However, it could have been lies as everything else was :-P

Brookhaven apartment permits
Just because someone says it is possible, does not mean it really is. I think, but am not sure, that basements are not included when calculating living space. Therefore I would imagine getting a permit for an apartment in that area would be difficult. Also BR's can not be in basements, per most town codes.

Re: Brookhaven apartment permits
Brookhaven DOES allow this.
This is my line of work and I recently got an apartment permit for a friend of mine in Patchogue.
Its a renewable temporary permit for the kitchen.

Interesting...do you know the first step in seeing if I can make an apartment legal is? I called the town and basically got no where and from what I read on their website it said no livable space in the basement...thanks!

The finished space of the basement needs to have a CO and all the proper code requirements
Meaning, egress and fire code sheetrock.
There are 2 steps to the process.
1 - A building permit for a finished basement, including a bathroom. A plumbing permit will be required for the bathroom.
2 - Then you have to file with the Accessory Apartment Review Board.
Review Bd Requirements
They have a lot of requirements but it is do-able.
