Diabetes Question.. UPDATED 6./1/17
We were try to control my diabetes with diet and exercise and no pills since my #'s weren't bad - fast forward 8 months later - weight gain from other medicine, no exercise, etc. so new blood test is next week and I feel I will now be put on medicine and I am not going to fight it this time - here's my question
Fasting #'s are high in AM - 120-140 During the day - before lunch, before dinner 90-105
Would I need meds if my #'s are normal except for the AM ?
** update - A1C is 6.5 - think its time to go on meds

Re: Diabetes Question..
That's for a medical professional to answer.
First question would be, why are your numbers so high in the morning ? What are you eating at night that would cause them to be so high in the morning ?

Diabetes Question..
Not a medical professional , but that is way too much bread in a day! For a person without diabetes it is way too much. Have a carb 1x a day, or whatever the doctor tell you and I think you will see a difference in your numbers.

Too many carbs at one meal. You should be limiting carbs at dinner also. I would try that in the week before your test. Whats you number an hour or two after your dinner like?

Diabetes Question..
My DH is pre-diabetic and he noticed that when his number was higher than he could go for a 30 min walk to lower his number. I'm wondering if (in addition to lowering your carb intake) that you should try to add walking in the morning.

Re: Diabetes Question..
What are your A1C numbers? That number is more useful than the daily fluctuations on a glucometer. I am also pre-diabetic (as is my dad), and based on just diet/exercise, I've gone from range of 6.3 to 5.7 (prediabetic is 5.7 - 6.1). I was put on Metformin to control it but I am working on dropping 15-20 lbs so I can get off it eventually. I've had no issues w/ being on it - I make sure to take it w/ food and I have heard its a good pill to take to prevent cancer.
My blood sugar level is always higher in the morning, I find that the key is definitely not eating heavy carbs at dinner, and eating a snack (nuts) every 3-4 hours so that my levels are stable. I don't eat pasta and limit bread to only a few servings a week.

Thank you all for writing - so I didn't respond quick - work got in the way -
I think the A1C is 6.7 I have to limit my bread for sure, that is my downfall and being a vegetarian doesn't help matters, I eat alot of carbs. I will watch myself this week, cut down on carbs and see what the test brings.

Re: Diabetes Question..
not sure but cinnamon is a very effective way to manage sugar. Get the capsules and start taking them ASAP. 2 per meal. It stabilizes your sugar levels.

Depends on what I eat - and haven't checked that too often, I normally check before a meal rather than after - when I have checked it is above 200, but that is one hr after.

Can I ask what your numbers are in the am? Did you loose weight on the Metaformin? My brother had horrible stomach issues with it..

Did someone tell you to test before dinner as opposed to after? I was always instructed to test and journal an hour after each meal and my target is to stay under 140 at that time. 200 is high, but if you weren't watching your dinner time carbs, that why. Try sticking to less than 30gm carbs at each meal and then try. You should see a difference.

Diabetes Question..
When I had gestational, which I know is a bit different, I could NEVER get my morning number to be lower and I was on insulin injections! I tried everything...I was strict with carbs, had a shot of something with protein before dinner..it didn't matter!

Diabetes Question..
I have gestational, which as the person above me said is different, but it's my understanding that you should be testing AFTER you eat/start to digest, so you can see how your body is managing the sugars. Also, the fasting numbers are the hardest to control (because you can't just control it with diet), so if your fasting numbers are high you might have to go on insulin to regulate those.

What determines if you get pills to lower sugar or insulin ? I would like I would start on a pill (like my brother did).

Re: Diabetes Question..
High morning blood sugar is not uncommon in diabetics. Research the Somogyi Effect as well as the Dawn Phenomenon and then speak to your doctor about your morning numbers at your next appointment.
If you would like to try supplements, lilqtny is right... cinnamon is great. My husband is type 2 and takes cinnamon capsules and they do help a lot. He also takes bitter melon, and that is helpful, too. But again, speak with your doctor.
Good luck!
This is an article by the Cleveland Clinic that sort of helps to explain the two. There are other websites out there with varying levels of information.

Just saw your update - are you on any anti-biotics or any other supplements? I think you need at least 3 straight readings of 6.1 or above for them to label you officially a Type 2 diabetic. I had my highest reading at 6.8 and thta was because I was on antibiotics for a week and it made my sugar shoot up so much. The next month I re-tested and it dropped to 5.8.
I did have minor issues w/ Metformin. Ask them to put you on the lowest dosage possible. I am at 500 mg twice a day, and make sure the pharmacists uses the softer smaller pill. My doctor had me on a 1x daily pill that was 1,000 mg but the pills are these huge osmotic tablets that i can feel running through my entire digestive track like a bowling ball. My dad is on 2,000 mg a day and he has to take it w/ food at lunch and dinner. I do 500 mg tablets at lunch and dinner and as long as i have it with food, I am ok. The sucky part is that it does tend to constipate me, so I make sure I eat lots of fruits and veggies so I dont have issues. You body eventually adjusts to the med. I def notice a difference when I don't take my daily pill now.
