Does anyone Kayak?

My son (10) has recently taking up an interest in Kayaking.....can you recommend good sturdy beginner kayaks? Dont want to spend a fortunate out of the gate in case his interest wanes. I would also need one, bc I am not letting him go out alone.

Also, any good places for beginners to kayak? We are north shore suffolk, was looking at Nissequoge (but I hear the current can be very strong), Stony Brook Harbor and Long Beach in Smithtown. Any other good areas that do not require resident permits?

I know the new LL Bean store in Smithaven mall has kayak discovery courses that they run at Hecksher State Park. I think the cost is about $25. They might be able to give you info on what kayak to buy too.

There is a Groupon for the place behind the Long Island Aquarium right now. They rent them, so maybe you could try it out before you buy

My son is 8 and enjoys kayaking. We only do short things like around northport.

Try to buy used. I see them for sale often on facebook buy/sell groups. Like someone else mentioned you could rent one to see if they are really interested.

When I see people with kayaks, I always wonder where they go. Would love to try with my kids when they are a bit older.

I bought a cheap one at DicksSporting Goods, was on sale for $179. Took it to Blydenburgh Park in Smithtown for my first outing. Its a lake there, great for beginners.
