I am also a boater and this story is just so upsetting. This sounds like it was a total freak accident. It is incredibly sad for all involved.

Boats are dangerous. In NYS they only require you to have a license and take safety courses if you have a jet ski/wave runner. Otherwise, you don't need it to operate a boat. Also, you don't need to insure your boats either. People have no idea what they are doing out there. Last weekend, we were in a cove where people are anchored and swimming everywhere. This man, with about 10 kids and his wife, were on his brand new 30' sea ray and he had no idea what he was doing. It was windy and he couldn't handle the boat. He almost ran his wife over while she was in the water. I was having a heart attack watching them. DH went to assist and the guy was just so arrogant and didn't want his help. It was crazy. Putting aside the safety component, I don't know why one would not want to know how to properly handle a $100K piece of equipment.

NYS needs to crack down on this and have stricter laws and regulations and ENFORCE them

This sounds like a freak accident and terrible all around. However in general there really needs to be more licensing requirements for boating

The NY Boating Safety Certificate (NYBSC) is informally referred to as a boating license. As of May 1, 2014, all boaters born after 05/01/1996 must carry a NYBSC when operating a motorboat in NY and anyone who operates a PWC (personal watercraft/jet-ski) must have one.

Basic Information about the course:

Participants must be at least 10 years old.
Minimum 8 hours of classroom instruction
Participants must score a 76% on final exam to pass
NYBSC does not expire, valid for life.

I took this class years ago, it was difficult. I did also get pulled over once and asked to show my license while on a jet ski. Maybe they will start enforcing it a bit more. Seems like a good idea.

Yes. Boating makes me soooo nervous. I feel like anyone can just get a boat and drive it. Are there any licensing requirements or mandatory training classes?

So tragic....Chat Icon

Jet skis require completion of a safety course - but boats don't.

So I can drive our large boat with zero instruction, but I need instruction for the 9' jet ski. Makes no sense!

(Certification should be required for all water crafts!)

My nephew got his boating license never stepping foot on an actual boat. It's ridiculous and so dangerous!
