Two boys, two separate sets of trains?

DS1 who is just under 4, is very into his Thomas Wooden Railway trains and tracks and he is kind enough (sometimes) to let his little brother (turning 2) play with him.

I feel like DS1 is probably going to be into those trains for a while (so it's not like we're just gonna hand-me-down them anytime soon) and I'm wondering if we should get DS2 his own set of trains and tracks. Any thoughts on this? Complete waste? Makes sense?

Makes sense to me. Some toys we have two of. They just cant share it and I am sick of hearing whining lol

Do you have a train table?
I would go for 2 sets of trains and one set of tracks... most of the fights occur over who has which train.
Works with multiple kids.

My kids are two years apart. We have one set of tracks with individual ownership of some trains, and shared other trains when my kids were into trains.

I don't know. I feel like with my kids (ages 4 and 1) all that would end up happening if we had two sets, is my 4 yo would just take all the tracks from the 2nd set to make her track bigger, and leave her brother with nothing, or 1 or 2 pieces of the set if she's feeling generous I personally wouldn't get two sets, just because A) I don't have a lot of storage space to begin with and my house is already overrun with toys and B) i think it would encourage them to share or be an opportunity to teach (or maybe force?) sharing.

But if it's something they both love and you have the space for the extra set, I don't see the harm in gertting it, especially since if they actually feel like sharing and working together, they could make an even bigger, longer track.

I wouldn't buy two of the exact same toy... but if you find a train/track set that's different enough maybe I'd consider buying it so they have some variety in their toys that they can both use.

I wouldn't get another set unless what you have isn't very big. Imo, that's the kind of toy they need to learn to share. At most, I may let them each have a few trains that are theirs but even that is a stretch to me. My kids are 5 and 2.5 and they have learned to share and take turns with most everything.

No way. Train sets they can share and share the trains. I would consider increasing the size of the set if it is smaller or getting a train table if you don't have one. I have 4 boys and no one really owns anything. The toys are shared.
I have bought duplicate hess trucks just because Santa brings those.

Thanks everyone! I appreciate the input. Maybe I'll keep the trains to a holiday gift so it's for both of them and DS1 will learn to share and then get DS2 something different of his own with his b'day coming up. Good perspective

I personally wouldn't bc from my experience, my train-loving DS started to lose interest in his trains at around age 5. And his younger brother who loved playing with the trains along with his brother and started doing so as soon as he could pull up and stand at the train table, has zero interest in Thomas trains. He declared the train table an Avenger table shortly after turning 3 and asked that all the trains and tracks be put away.

I wouldn't no and all 3 of my boys have been big into trains at some point. Everyone shares. Yes there are issues sometimes, but oh well. That's part of them learning.
