Looking for Recommendations For a Fun Place With Great Food in NYC For My Daughter's 9th Birthday
Hi All,
We're taking my soon to be 9-year old daughter into the city for a fun day of shopping at American Girl Doll. We then want to take her for a FUN, GREAT meal with special desserts. We'd love to stay around the vicinity (if possible) of American Girl Doll(we don't mind taking a taxi somewhere). We'll be taking the LIRR into the city. We aren't city people so I need help. I want this to be an extra special day for her.
Thanks!

Tea at the Plaza, short walking distance. .
Is it a restaurant though? Someone recommended somewhere else either The Sugar Factory or Serendipity 3. Like hearing other suggestions.

I think I am in the minority, but we did not like the sugar factory at all. We have also been to Serendipity 3 and liked it much better.

Would you mind giving me more details about what you didn't like at The Sugar Factory and what you DID like at Serendipity 3?

Believe it or not, the desserts. Don't get me wrong, they are definitely fun and every kids dream. But the milkshakes are $20- which I wouldn't mind paying if my kid actually ate it. He ordered this milkshake with a twinkie on top. It was so sweet, big, and over the top- he took 4 bites and was full. He never even made it to the milkshake part. Now, he is 6, not 9, your DD may eat more. My friend was with us with her DD, who ordered a milkshake with a candy necklace and cotton candy on top. Again, $20 and the kid was full before she made it to the milkshake. They are known for their over the top desserts, so I should have known what I was getting myself into when we decided to go. That is my fault. But we won't be going back. We didn't eat any food, we only went for dessert, so I can't comment on that. Serendipity 3 is just more low key, the food & desserts were delicious. The frozen hot chocolate is so yummy. Most people love sugar factory- our experience wasn't the best. But that could be because the kids we were with are no fun and weren't impressed with tacky milkshakes. I think most kids love it.

I second Serendipity. I can't wait to take DD to Alice's Tea Cup, though none of them are really that close to where you'll be.
I've never been to Sugar Factory but haven't heard anything too good about it (though not from anyone with kids).

I see there are 3 locations of The Sugar Factory. If I chose that, which location is closest to Penn Station since we'll be going home after.

None of the restaurants mentioned are walking distance to Penn. Nothing is walking distance to Penn, Penn is a black hole
Sugar Factory is downtown and UWS. UWS is probably easier to get to, but not close.

Ok. Someone also mentioned to me about Ellen's Stardust Diner. I know it's close by and they said if she likes entertainment more than dessert that this would be a good choice. Decisions...decisions!

Oh I forgot about that! Yes, that's a good idea and closer, too!

Re: Looking for Recommendations For a Fun Place With Great Food in NYC For My Daughter's 9th Birthday
Ellen's is fun with the singing servers, but the food is diner food (worse I think), and it's super pricey. Plus they cram you in there!!
Dylan's candy bar has a cafe with cupcake shaped booths. Looks cute, never been.
Sugar Factory seems to be a hit with some friends of mine. The fruity looking drink that they pour stuff in to make it smoke looks cool! All of those over the top milkshakes...no one can finish!
Max Brenner has good looking chocolate and desserts.
We enjoyed Alice's Tea Cup.
American Girl Cafe is adorable with the birthday cake option. Since you are going there to shop, you should just eat there.

Looking for Recommendations For a Fun Place With Great Food in NYC For My Daughter's 9th Birthday
We JUST did the Stardust Diner for my daughter's 9th birthday yesterday! She absolutely loved all the singing. The food was ok but really you are there for the experience. The desserts were delicious too. It was a great time for the whole family.

Years ago we were at American Girl Doll, did the cake and lunch and we thought the food was just so-so. We want a good meal.
