I know this is an old post but seriously thinking of buying a home. It would be Cannan Elementary school. I am currently in Sachem and I love the school we are in. My daughter is in a 12:1:1 class so my question is how is there special education programs?? My DD receives Ot, Pt, and speech. She is in 2nd grade. Does Cannan have a 12:1:1?
I just want to make sure she would get great services just as Sachem has given her through the years. I am scared to move her but rather have a place to call home than live in an apartment.

Wonderful Superintendent Dr. Hynes making amazing changes. His wife took a job as the head of curriculum in Sachem. Sachem is a better district overall but Patch Med is definitely changing for the better.

That's debatable. We are in special ed in Sachem and looking into out of district placement.

Pat-Med schools and area

My son is in Kindergarten in Pat Med in a 12-1-1. He doesn't go to our "home" school, he goes to one that has that special class. I think that it depends on where the need is, where they set the class up. So far, I love it.

Definitely debatable. I'm a special Ed teacher in Pat-Med, and think we're tops in special Ed services. To add, I also live in district, and wouldn't want my kids going anywhere else.

We are in sachem dealing with special ed and I've had it with them! They are all about saving money and less about what is good for the kids. Teachers have been wonderful but the administrators only care about money! Pm if you have any more details but if I could I'd move districts!

Glad to know I am not the only one who feels that way about Sachem.

Unfortunately I feel like a lot of LI districts are like this (about the money, and not in the best interests of the kids). I had to hire an advocate to get what my son should have been getting all along.

If I ever moved I'd probably consult with this advocate first before deciding where to go, since she has experience dealing with districts across LI.

Can you recommend where you found your advocate?

I understand districts have to make tough choices but what was done to my daughter over the summer has been traumatic to her and was not in her best interest. It saved the district money and that was all they cared about!!!!

That's good to know! Sachem can move schools every year, not sure if Pat med is the same way?

Do you know what schools have the 12:1:1 and 15:1:1 ?

Yes they are. Many like Sayville and Bluepoint don't have the funds to provide for special needs. My neighbors and also another friend moved from Pat-Med and Bayport/Bluepoint back into Sachem just for the special ed programs. They are both really happy and the children are thriving. I have two mainstream children in Sachem but I definitely feel and see the upswing of the district in the past year.
