At home reading

I have a Kindergartner and 2nd grader and I'm struggling with finding the time to do the reading aspect with them. The time I come home from work and help them with their homework - it's dinner, showers, getting ready for bed, etc. Plus it doesn't help that I have a 2 year constantly wanting my attention. They came home with note from teachers to log on to razkids and I just need to start putting time aside for them to log on and read.

When do you do the reading with your child? After homework? Before bed?

My 2nd grader is really good at reading independently so it's not really a struggle with her but more so with my Kindergartner ... she's coming home with books and I really need to put time aside for her. I just need to set a time.

The schedule is so hard. We do all of our reading at bedtime now, but as DS grows im sure we will need more time. But maybe for your Kindergartner you can start there.

Yea, I am thinking that too. Maybe 30 mins before bed time just set time to do reading. It really is hard!

Re: At home reading

When we had to do it- as in when she had to do a reading log in 1st grade- we would read after homework. If we waited, she would never want to go back to it.
Also, we used to read more on the weekends and I would just record those books on the log as if she read them on Monday, Tuesday, Wed- when in reality she may have read 6 books on the weekend and none on Monday or Tuesday or Wed.

This year (2nd grade) she is "supposed" to read 15 min a night but she doesn't have to log it so it's more loosey goosy.

When she wants to read, she reads.
She loves reading and will often ask if she can read me a book. But I dont' force it. I don't want to make it a chore for her and turn her off to it.

My 2nd grader loves to read to it's easier with her. Just have to find more time to actually sit with my other daughter.

What are they doing after school up until you get home? Do they go to aftercare? If so, I would have them do the reading there.

I would have them read to Grandma then. It's silly for them to to wait until you get home, with dinner, etc. like you said. My DD did Razkids, and the books are pretty brief for K age students. Feasibly she can do that while grandma tends to the other kids.

Yea, I think that's when I am going to have her log on.

When DS isn't interested in a book, he's really hard to get him to read. Then, like magic, he finds a series he likes and he's reading the entire time from getting home, thru dinner, and before bed.

I don't allow devices on school nights and he doesn't do extra activities so he has to entertain himself while I'm cooking dinner. Sometimes he plays, and sometimes he reads. Here's our typical schedule:

5:45 - get home and I start cooking (he entertains himself)
6:15-6:30 - dinner
6:30 - homework
7:30 - get ready for bed (brush teeth, bath, etc). Once that's done, I read a few chapters to him in bed, then he reads on his own about 10 minutes. He's usually done around 8:30-8:45 and I go back to tuck him in (turn out light and talk to him a bit while he settles down to sleep).

On a night where he's interested in the book, he'll read around 75 minutes. If he's not interested - it's hard to squeak out 20 minutes.

I also have a 2nd grader, kindergartener and a 2 year old. What works for us is my husband and I each read with one of the kids at night after regular homework is done (math sheets, vocabulary, sight words etc)

Read together before bed. DH reads with DS, I read with DD. But DS will pick up a book by himself too.

I have kids the same age.
We don't have a log yet...

But we do a few things including: limit weekday activities to M,W,F. This was HARD and Saturday, we are running around like crazy.

So they come home, homework, eat, clean up, and then we all go to the living room and read. The two take turns reading to me (each reads for 5-10 minutes) and the two year old plays or, more often, looks at books herself and "reads to me". They read their own book quietly while they are waiting for their turn. I made a new "no TV on weeknights" rule which helps a lot.

Don't know what time you are getting home... but this works if you eat dinner around 6-7. I figure 30-60 minutes homework & 20 minutes read.Even if you do it all after dinner, it's 8:20 and time for bed when it's all done.

We eat dinner around 6pm. You are right about the no TV on weeknights! That 30 mins or so can be the reading time. And we limited activities to only Mon and Weds.

We typically do reading at bedtime. DS 1 - in 2nd, reads his Captain Underpants for at least 15 minutes (this one must be good because he's been asking to read it).

I read a book to DS 2 (k). Or sometimes DS 1 does it if he finishes his 15 minutes earlier in the evening.

Nell - I agree - I love not having a log. Hated that thing.
