jury duty question
I'm in nassau, about 35 miles away from east islip, where i've been asked to sit on a federal jury case. I'm wondering if I have any grounds to get out of it because I have a daughter who gets picked up from daycare at 3pm daily, and you're required to stay at jury duty until 5pm. I'm at least an hour drive during rush hour, and there's no way I would be able to pick her up in time so I'm getting kinda nervous about it. I've called numerous times with no luck in talking to anyone, and I wrote a letter and haven't heard back. What else can I do?

Not sure what i'm going to do... Dh would have to leave work early to get her from daycare. Which kind of defeats the whole purpose because he's losing out on work hours over this. Kind of ridiculous that nobody will answer the phones too. ugh

Re: jury duty question
My dh sent a letter stating he was the sole caregiver of DD and even though she is now in school, school ends at 230 and he needs to be home for her. He sent it with a copy of her birth certificate and that was it. He was excused. This worked twice so far but this was for suffolk not federal so not sure if it's different

jury duty question
I was asked to sit in Brooklyn. I was able to get someone on the phones I sent in a letter stating it was insane of me to have to drive 75 miles each way and I would gladly serve in islip. I was excused. 6 months later was summons to serve. I was on standby and it was fine. Im good for 10 years

jury duty question
I had Grand Jury in June for 4 weeks. I thought it was going to be awful, but it actually wasn't too bad.
I will say I thought everyone who was summoned was mandated to stay, but they had 5 "extra" people who got to leave. They put everyone's number into a jury pool and picked people at random. Before they did this, they asked if anyone could not serve. One very elderly man said he couldn't serve due to his unreliable health. They let him go.
Unrelated, my schedule said I would need to be available 9-5, 4 days a week. The actual hours were more like 9:30-4 and some weeks we met only 3 days. It really was not as bad as I had anticipated. I was very nervous about missing work since I am a teacher and it was when I was doing review for the Regents.

even if we were there until 4, i pick up DD at 3 an hour away. It's impossible- I wrote the letter and sent it in with a copy of her birth certificate. Gonna try to call again today as well

Were you actually picked for a case? Or are you talking about just going to the jury pool?
If you are already picked for a case - it will be very hard to get out of now.
I may have a better number if you still can't get through. LMK

Re: jury duty question
Did you read the information on the questionnaire? You can submit paperwork to support that you have to pick up your daughter. DH just got the questionnaire and this information was included. I think I still have it at home if you need it.

jury duty question
On the jury notice it'll say everything you need in order to have this adjourned for years. I did this at the beginning of the year and I know I included a letter stating why I could not attend, a letter from my job showing the hours I worked and a copy of my DS's birth certificate. I don't remember if I included anything else but look at the original notice you received.

not picked for a case- got the letter to begin calling in the night before nov 6 for two weeks until I am summoned. DOn't want to be summoned because i'm about an hour from islip and can't get back in time to pick up the baby. If you can FM me the number to call that would be great

Re: jury duty question
I was the opposite - I live in East Islip and was summoned to Brooklyn. I faxed a letter claiming travel hardship and requested to serve in islip. A week later I got a new summons for islip in the mail - same with 2 week call in until summoned. I think on day 9 or something they finally got around to my number and I went in. Sat there all day and they never got to me and I was dismissed.
i wouldnt necessarily worry yet because they odds are you may not even get picked at all. And if you DO you can also claim your hardship at the actual court - this happened to my husband. he was chosen for grand jury but we literally JUST had a baby and he runs his own business so it became a financial hardship and he was dismissed.
